Spanish fighter jets intercept Russian aircraft near NATO borders in the Baltics

NATO responds swiftly to presence of Russian bombers

Spanish forces in Lithuania intercepted two Russian SU-24D aircraft. The operation was part of NATO’s strengthened eastern defense. The incident sparked renewed discussions about regional security.

Events in Baltic airspace have once again drawn attention to security concerns for Spain and its allies. Spanish fighter jets stationed at a base in Lithuania were forced to scramble after Russian military aircraft were detected near NATO’s borders. This incident serves as another reminder of heightened tensions on Europe’s eastern frontier and highlights how important Spain’s role is within the Alliance’s collective defense.

According to RUSSPAIN, the operation took place as part of NATO’s ongoing mission to monitor the airspace above the Baltic states. The Spanish contingent, based at Siauliai, operates within an international unit that provides protection for Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Since these countries do not have their own fighter aircraft, allies take turns being responsible for their air security.

Emergency scramble

On Monday, Spanish pilots received an Alpha Scramble alert—meaning an immediate takeoff to intercept unidentified or suspicious aerial targets. This time, two Russian SU-24D Fencer bombers were spotted in international airspace, but dangerously close to NATO’s borders. The Spanish Eurofighters (C.16) quickly took to the skies to identify and escort the Russian aircraft, preventing them from approaching allied airspace.

During the operation, Spanish fighter jets not only visually identified the type and nationality of the Russian aircraft, but also escorted them until they left the danger zone. The TK23 tanker aircraft provided support in the air, allowing for longer patrols and a quick response to any potential threats.

Mission and equipment

The Spanish military contingent in Lithuania operates as part of the Vilkas unit within the Baltic Air Policing mission. The Spanish forces have two Eurofighter jets on permanent standby under the Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) system. This means that both crews and aircraft can take off within minutes after receiving an alert.

The SU-24D Fencer is a Soviet tactical bomber still used by the Russian Air Force. It is designed for low-altitude strikes and can carry out both combat and reconnaissance missions. The presence of such aircraft near NATO borders always draws increased attention and requires an immediate response.

Reasons for the increased presence

Spain’s participation in the mission stems from NATO’s decision to strengthen its eastern flank after several airspace violations. In September 2025, Poland invoked consultations under Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty after a Russian drone crossed its border. This led to the launch of Operation Centinela Oriental, as Alliance member states increased their regional presence, providing additional resources and forces to enhance air patrols.

The operation involves not only Spain, but also Denmark, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Each country has deployed its aircraft and crews to provide round-the-clock monitoring and to respond swiftly to any incidents. Spain views its participation as a contribution to collective security and a reaffirmation of its commitment to allied obligations.

Context and consequences

Such interceptions are not uncommon in the Baltic region. In recent years, Spanish fighter jets have repeatedly been scrambled to escort Russian military aircraft approaching NATO borders. These actions are considered standard practice during periods of heightened tension and serve as a deterrent against potential provocations.

Similar incidents were recorded in 2024 and 2025, when Spanish fighters escorted Russian Tu-160 and Su-27 aircraft. Each mission was completed without incident, but sparked discussion at the level of military command and politicians. According to russpain.com, regular interceptions highlight the importance of international cooperation and the need to maintain a high level of readiness in the region.
