Against the backdrop of record tourist numbers in Spain, exceeding 96 million foreign visitors in 2024, and growing discontent in overcrowded cities like Barcelona and Palma, British media have discovered a quiet and luxurious alternative. Journalists dubbed the coastal town of Almerimar in the province of Almería a “little Monaco,” highlighting its exclusivity, tranquil atmosphere, and the absence of mass protests against tourists.
The heart of life in Almerimar is its large marina, which features 1,100 berths. Capable of accommodating yachts up to 60 meters long, it offers a full range of services for sailing and water recreation. Beyond its primary function, the port also serves as the city’s main social and commercial hub, home to restaurants, bars, and shops, creating an elegant setting for evening strolls.
The resort offers a variety of beaches to suit all preferences. The most accessible are Poniente (Playa de Poniente) and Levante (Playa de Levante), featuring fine sand and well-developed infrastructure along the promenade. To the east lies San Miguel Beach (Playa de San Miguel), a favorite among kitesurfers thanks to its shifting dunes and ideal waves. For a secluded getaway, the rocky Guardias Viejas Beach (Guardias Viejas) offers views of the castle of the same name.
For nature lovers, the true gem is Playa de Punta Entinas-Sabinar, located within the natural park of the same name. Here, miles of untouched coastline border lagoons inhabited by waterfowl, with the landscape completed by a historic lighthouse.
In addition to beach recreation, Almerimar offers many options for active leisure. Water sports such as sailing, windsurfing, and paddle surfing are highly popular here thanks to excellent weather conditions. Golf enthusiasts will find a large 27-hole golf complex. The natural park provides excellent opportunities for hiking, and kayaks can be rented for peaceful paddling on Lago Victoria.
The region’s historical heritage is represented by the 19th-century Castillo de Guardias Viejas, as well as older monuments reminiscent of the area’s rich past. Almerimar’s gastronomy is based on a blend of the freshest seafood and vegetables from local greenhouses. Guests should try the traditional arroz a banda, gambón rojo de Almería, jibia en salsa, and the refreshing pipirrana salad.
