In the coming months, Spain will be at the center of the Catholic world’s attention: the visit of Pope Leon XIV, scheduled for June, has already impacted the agendas of key government officials. Preparations for the pontiff’s arrival have accelerated the organization of official meetings involving the royal couple and the head of Madrid’s government. These events highlight the significance of the visit and reflect expectations regarding Spain’s role in Europe’s religious and civic life.

The last papal visit to Spain was in 2011, and since then the country’s Catholic community has repeatedly expressed hope for a return. Despite numerous requests, Pope Francis did not visit during his twelve-year pontificate. Now, with Leon XIV’s visit officially confirmed, preparations are in full swing for his stays in Madrid, Barcelona, and the Canary Islands. Each city will host different events: Madrid will mark the 60th anniversary of the Episcopal Conference, in Barcelona the pontiff will visit Sagrada Familia, and in the Canaries the focus will be on the issue of migration.

High-Level Meetings

Ahead of Pope León XIV’s visit to Spain, the schedules of Spanish leaders have undergone significant changes. This week, King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia are set to meet the pontiff in the Vatican. It will be their first official visit to León XIV since a brief protocol greeting at the mass marking the start of his papacy in May 2025. During the visit, Queen Letizia is expected to exercise the unique privilege of Catholic monarchies—to appear before the Pope in a white outfit, a distinction belonging to the Spanish and Belgian crowns, as well as the principalities of Luxembourg and Monaco. For all other women, regardless of their status, tradition prescribes wearing black.

The royal couple’s trip to Rome will not be limited to an audience with the Pope. After meeting León XIV, Felipe VI will visit the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, where he will be granted the title of honorary protocanon. This tradition has deep historical roots and symbolizes the special bond between the Spanish monarchy and one of Rome’s most important churches. Until now, the title belonged to King Emeritus Juan Carlos, who received it in 1977. Felipe VI will now take the honorary place in the basilica’s choir, while the chapter will pray for the health and soul of Spanish monarchs.

Ayuso and Madrid’s preparations

Alongside the royal family’s visit, the head of Madrid’s government is preparing a trip. Isabel Díaz Ayuso’s visit to the Vatican is scheduled for June 1, a few days before the start of the Pope’s apostolic visit to Spain. According to a RUSSPAIN source, the meeting was organized at Ayuso’s own initiative, aiming to demonstrate Madrid’s readiness to ensure a successful stay for the pontiff in the capital. She also emphasized that the visit is an opportunity to showcase to the world the region’s unique way of life, respect, and faith, where everyone finds their own place.

There are no reports yet of plans by representatives from Catalonia and the Canary Islands to visit the Vatican before the Pope’s arrival, but they are expected to take an active part in local events. In Madrid, preliminary information points to a large-scale Mass with youth participation, highlighting special attention to the younger generation of believers. Barcelona and the Canary Islands are also preparing to welcome the distinguished guest, focusing on issues relevant to their regions.

Historical traditions and symbols

The connection between the Spanish monarchy and the Catholic Church runs deep in history. The tradition of granting Spanish kings the honorary title of proto-canon of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore has lasted for centuries. This status does not entail religious duties but highlights the Spaniards’ special devotion to the Virgin Mary. The basilica’s interior still features gold brought by Christopher Columbus from the Americas, gifted by the Catholic Monarchs to Pope Alexander I. In 1982, John Paul II called Spain the “Land of Mary,” marking the Vatican’s special regard for the country.

Until Felipe VI assumes the new title, King Emeritus Juan Carlos continues to hold it. After the ceremony, Felipe VI will have his own seat in the basilica’s choir, and the chapter will pray for the Spanish monarchs. Formally, the king also becomes the patron of the church, highlighting not only the religious but also the cultural significance of this event for Spain.

Pope Leon XIV is the current head of the Roman Catholic Church, elected after the pontificate of Pope Francis. His visit to Spain will be the first in over fifteen years and will cover three regions of the country. Leon XIV places special emphasis on youth, intercultural dialogue, and social justice—priorities reflected in his itinerary. Meetings with Spanish monarchs and politicians underline the importance of relations between the Vatican and Spain, as well as the country’s role in the Catholic world.
