Andalusia at Risk: New Storm Looms After Devastating ‘Marta’ and Mass Evacuations

Urgent response, billions in losses and growing concerns about the region’s future after the disaster

Andalusia faces renewed danger as a new storm threatens the region following the devastation of ‘Marta’. Thousands have been evacuated and the damage is extensive. Authorities are demanding immediate action.

The aftermath of the recent natural disaster in Andalusia is being felt across Spain: the region has found itself at the center of a large-scale calamity, impacting not just infrastructure but also the economy. After the devastating impact of Storm ‘Marta’, residents and authorities are faced with the urgent need to respond to new threats. The extent of the damage and the number of evacuees highlight just how serious the situation has become for the entire country.

Authorities in Andalusia were forced to take emergency measures: more than 11,000 people left their homes and losses have already exceeded €3.5 billion. Roads and agriculture have been especially hard hit – according to estimates, up to 75% of arable land has been affected. The waters of the Guadalquivir river rose above their banks, leading to the closure of sluices and mass evacuations in several towns. The regional government has requested assistance from national and European funds to mitigate the economic and social consequences of the disaster.

A new threat

Although Storm ‘Marta’ is gradually leaving Andalusia, it is too early to relax. Meteorologists predict yet another weather front will hit the region as early as Sunday evening. Experts warn that after weeks of relentless rain, the soil in Andalusia is saturated, so even minor precipitation could trigger fresh flooding and landslides. Authorities caution that the situation will remain tense at least until midweek.

The president of the autonomous region, Juanma Moreno, stressed that even light rains now pose a threat to populated areas, as the soil can no longer absorb water. He also noted the risks of land movement caused by water pressure in the ground, although so far these phenomena have not reached catastrophic proportions. Residents of the hardest-hit areas anxiously await developments, hoping that the new storm will be less destructive.

Evacuations and damage

Unprecedented safety measures were introduced in various parts of Andalusia. In Sevilla, for the first time in 15 years, floodgates were closed in the Triana area to prevent flooding. On Saturday, water levels in the Guadalquivir reached dangerous heights near La Cartuja, but residential neighborhoods were not affected. In Lora del Río, there was a threat of stormwater reservoirs overflowing, causing additional concern among local residents.

In Córdoba, for the first time in history, access to the pedestrian walkway on the Puente Romano was closed, and around 1,500 people were evacuated as a precaution. In Cádiz province, the number of evacuees reached 8,000, most of them from Grazalema. In Málaga, about 500 people left their homes, and in the Sevillian town of Tocina, 40 residents of a care home were evacuated.

Economic losses

Storm ‘Marta’ has caused enormous damage to the region’s economy. Restoring the road infrastructure alone will require at least 500 million euros. Agriculture suffered even more: according to agricultural associations, losses in this sector amount to 3 billion euros. Nearly three quarters of all cultivated land were flooded or damaged by landslides.

The Andalusian authorities have already begun revising budget priorities to allocate funds for disaster recovery. The regional president has appealed to the central government for resources from the reserve fund and has also initiated a request to the European Union for emergency financial assistance. Decisions on reallocating budget items to support affected industries are expected soon.

Response and outlook

Many residents of Andalusia were forced to leave their homes and farms, uncertain when they could return to normal life. Authorities promise that returning will only be possible after a full safety inspection. The region remains on high alert: rivers and reservoirs are at critical levels, and forecasters warn that further dangerous weather is possible.

In light of recent events, the RUSSPAIN.COM editorial team has previously reported on how past disasters similar to the current one led to mass evacuations and road closures. In one of our recent articles, we examined in detail the aftermath of a storm that paralyzed transportation and forced thousands to leave their homes. You can find out more about how the region coped with such challenges in our publication on mass evacuations and road closures.

Reflecting on recent events, it’s important to note that such disasters in Andalucía are not new. In recent years, the region has already faced devastating storms that caused widespread flooding, disrupted transportation, and resulted in significant economic losses. Each time, authorities were forced to introduce emergency measures, and residents had to adapt to new realities. In 2024 and 2025, similar weather anomalies also led to temporary evacuations and school closures, as well as interruptions in food supplies. These events highlight just how vulnerable many areas of Spain remain in the face of natural disasters.
