This year, the Spanish National Day (Día de la Hispanidad) falls on Sunday, October 12. For many people in the country, it’s not only a public holiday but also a time to consider where and when they can buy groceries. In 2025, supermarket opening hours are especially confusing: some regions have moved the holiday to Monday, and retail chains are responding differently to the holiday schedule.
In Andalusia, Aragon, Asturias, Castilla y León, Extremadura, and Melilla, the holiday has been officially moved to October 13. This means residents in these autonomous communities will have a three-day weekend, but stores will be following special opening hours. In all other regions, Sunday remains the only day off, and most supermarkets will operate according to their usual Sunday policies.
Mercadona, as always, makes no exceptions for holidays: all its stores will be closed on both Sunday and Monday where the day off has been moved. The regular operating hours are Monday to Saturday, from 9 AM to 9:30 PM. If you usually shop at Mercadona, it’s best to plan your purchases in advance.
Lidl takes a less uniform approach. Depending on the city and even the neighborhood, some stores will open as usual, while others may start later or close earlier. In some cases, doors will remain shut, especially in places where stores are typically closed on Sundays. Before heading to Lidl, it’s wise to check the current schedule for your specific location.
Aldi is also adjusting its schedule. In some locations, doors will open, but opening hours may vary. In regions where the holiday has been postponed, some stores may operate on a reduced schedule or remain closed. You can check if your Aldi will be open through the company’s official online service.
Carrefour, on the other hand, plans to keep many of its stores open, including Express formats. However, exact opening times depend on the type of outlet: hypermarkets, city stores, and supermarkets may have different schedules. In general, most will operate as usual, but it’s best to check before visiting.
Dia does not provide a clear answer: some stores will open but with reduced hours, while others will remain closed. Where doors do open, hours often shift—stores may open later or close for lunch. Up-to-date information for specific locations can be found on the chain’s website.
Alcampo is also not closing all its stores. Mainly, those that usually open on Sundays will be available. Hours depend on the format: hypermarkets, Alcampo City, and smaller shops may have different schedules. As with other chains, it’s best to check current opening hours before your visit.
Overall, the October holidays in Spain in 2025 are disrupting the usual shopping routine. If you don’t want to be left without essentials, it’s worth checking in advance how your favorite supermarket will be operating these days.
