In the heart of Madrid, at Plaza de Pontejos, the ‘Forest of Wishes’ has returned this year—a free New Year’s attraction that has quickly become one of the most popular destinations for residents and visitors alike. Here, everyone can not only make a wish but also feel part of a large city-wide celebration. The space is styled like a metro station: twelve fir trees glow in the colors of all the subway lines, and the atmosphere is filled with music, lights, and children’s laughter.
Organizers have focused on family recreation and interactivity. Admission is free, and opening hours are as convenient as possible—from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., except for a few holidays. This year’s design theme centers on the three states of water: ice, steam, and liquid. Guests can take part in a short quest, solving riddles and completing tasks to learn more about nature and ecology.
Immersed in the atmosphere
Inside the ‘Forest of Wishes’, guests are greeted by entertainers dressed as magical forest guardians—in red cloaks and wide-brimmed hats. They guide visitors along the route, explain how to participate in the activities, and create a fairy-tale experience. Along the way, jugglers, musicians, and performers add energy and joy to the festivities.
Special attention has been given to children: a free illustrated booklet with puzzles, fun facts, and tips on caring for nature has been prepared for them. QR codes can be found throughout the forest, providing access to a virtual guide—a friendly elf named Rondel. He explains the participation rules and helps kids navigate the festive bustle.
Wishes and Traditions
The main tradition is to leave a message for the coming year. Each pine tree is decorated with paper ornaments where anyone can write down their wishes or greetings. Each of the twelve trees is illuminated in the colors of a specific metro line, creating a unique and memorable scene, especially in the evening.
This year, organizers have also focused on sustainability: all forest decorations are made from eco-friendly materials, and the children’s booklets feature tips on saving water and protecting nature. In this way, the celebration becomes not only fun but also educational.
Festive Routes
Plaza Pontejos is just a few steps from the Sol metro station, making the “Forest of Wishes” easily accessible. You can get here via any of three metro lines, as well as the many buses that run through the city center. Nearby, the traditional Christmas market “Casita de Pontejos” is open, offering handmade items crafted by social organizations.
Just a few minutes’ walk away is the famous nativity scene at the Real Casa de Correos, adorned with tens of thousands of lights. This site is also popular among families with children and tourists looking to experience the spirit of a Spanish Christmas.
