Spain is once again being hit by severe weather — this time, Catalonia and the Valencian Community have come under threat. Over the weekend, powerful rains brought on by a strong cyclone swept through these regions in the evening and overnight. Authorities declared a red level alert, and the railway company Renfe has responded with special measures for passengers.
Everyone who purchased tickets for trains passing through the affected zones may now change the date or cancel their trip free of charge. This applies to routes through the provinces of Tarragona, Castellón, and Valencia. The company advises against traveling unless absolutely necessary to avoid putting oneself at risk.
Meteorologists warn that the downpours could be so intense that up to 180 liters of water per square meter could fall within just a few hours. The situation is expected to be especially difficult in southern Tarragona and northern Castellón after 8:00 p.m. Authorities in Valencia have already ordered schools to be closed in the southern suburbs and parks to be shut to prevent possible emergencies.
The bad weather is expected to persist in the region through the end of the month. Residents are advised to exercise extreme caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay tuned for updates from local services. Renfe, for its part, will continue to keep passengers informed about any changes to schedules or travel conditions.
