Scandal Erupts Around Errejón as Sumar Secretly Financed Muliaá’s Legal Expenses

Why is the party withholding support details and what comes next

Sumar provided financial support to Elisa Muliaá in her case against Íñigo Errejón The amount was not disclosed The case is being heard in Madrid More details in our article

The controversy surrounding former politician Íñigo Errejón continues to escalate. The spotlight falls not only on the proceedings themselves but also on the unexpected details of how actress Elisa Mouliaá’s legal expenses are being covered. Sumar, a party that had not previously publicized its involvement, has turned out to be the main sponsor of the crowdfunding campaign paying for the lawyer, the prosecutor, and a psychiatric expert. Despite this, representatives from the political group categorically refuse to disclose the exact amount they contributed.

In October 2024, Mouliaá publicly accused Errejón of sexual assault that allegedly took place in the summer of 2021. She then launched a crowdfunding campaign to cover her legal fees. It soon emerged that Sumar had made the largest contribution, effectively becoming the main financial backer. However, the party opted not to make their support public, and the details of the donation remain unclear.

Secret backing

The question of why Sumar decided to support Mouliaá remains unanswered. Party representatives claim their actions were based purely on solidarity with victims. They say that a request for assistance was made and they could not refuse. Still, when pressed about the size of the financial contribution, they declined to respond, insisting it was irrelevant. This approach raises further questions: if the aid was truly substantial, why not disclose it openly?

Muliá, in turn, publicly thanked Sumar for their support, emphasizing that without this assistance, it would have been difficult for her to continue her legal battle. Nevertheless, neither she nor the party have disclosed the details of the agreement. The whole story appears to be a meticulously planned operation to provide aid while keeping everything strictly confidential.

Legal intrigue

The legal proceedings in Errejón’s case are not yet over. The outcome now depends on a decision by the Madrid Provincial Court (Audiencia Provincial de Madrid). The prosecutor’s office has already called for the case to be dismissed, having found insufficient grounds for prosecution. However, a final ruling has not been made, and it is still unclear whether Errejón will actually end up in the dock.

Interestingly, Errejón left politics literally on the eve of the police complaint being filed. In October 2024, he resigned from all positions and left Sumar, where he was a deputy and one of its key figures. His departure coincided with a wave of anonymous allegations of inappropriate behavior toward women, which were actively discussed on social media. Just hours after his resignation, Muliá went to the police, and the next day news of her allegations became public.

Crowdfunding and lawyers

To cover legal expenses, Muliá opted for crowdfunding—a method that is becoming increasingly popular in Spain for high-profile cases. The fundraiser was launched to pay for the services of a lawyer, prosecutor, and psychiatric evaluation. The actress was represented by renowned criminal lawyer Alfredo Arrién, who took the case immediately after Muliá reached out.

According to sources familiar with the situation, it was Sumar that made the largest contribution to the fund. Other participants in the campaign were individuals, but their donations paled in comparison to the party’s support. Even so, none of the parties are willing to disclose details: the exact amount raised and how much came from Sumar remain a mystery.

Политический подтекст

This entire story has taken on a distinctly political dimension. Sumar, a party that presents itself as a defender of women’s rights, has found itself at the center of a scandal involving one of its former leaders. Supporting Muliá appears to be an effort to distance itself from Errejón and demonstrate a commitment to its principles. However, the reluctance to disclose funding details raises questions about double standards and attempts to hide the party’s true motives.

The legal drama continues, with the public closely following every development. The decision by the Madrid court could set a precedent for similar cases in the future. For now, it remains to be seen how this story will end, and what role Sumar’s hidden support will ultimately play.
