Snow and Ice Paralyze Traffic on Roads in Four Spanish Regions

Which highways are closed and what drivers need to know next

Nine roads in Andalucía, Asturias, Castilla y León, and Navarra are closed due to heavy snowfall. Another eight routes have traffic restrictions. Drivers are being warned about hazardous weather conditions.

Heavy snowfall and icy conditions have once again disrupted daily life across several regions of Spain. As a result of the severe weather, nine roads have been completely closed to traffic. Restrictions are also in place on eight more routes, requiring drivers to take special precautions. The most challenging conditions are reported on secondary roads in Andalucía, Asturias, Castilla y León, and Navarra.

In Andalucía, three roads in the province of Almería—A-1178 (Las Menas-Pontocarrero), AL-5405 (Escúllar-La Estación), and AL-5402 (Bayárcal-Laroles)—are inaccessible. In Granada, the A-337 (Laroles-Ferreira) and A-4025 leading to Sierra Nevada remain closed. In Asturias, traffic on the SD-2 near La Farrapona has come to a complete halt, and in Salamanca (Castilla y León), the DSA-191 is shut down in Candelario. In Navarra, the NA-2021 (Pikatua) and NA-2012 (Muskilda-Irati) are also blocked.

Traffic restrictions have been imposed on eight more roads in Almería, Granada, Asturias, and Salamanca. Snow chains are mandatory, buses and trucks are prohibited, and the speed limit has been reduced to 30 km/h. Drivers must remain extremely cautious to avoid accidents and not get stranded in the snow.

The situation is further complicated by dense fog covering western parts of the country. Drivers are being alerted about reduced visibility on the roads of Castilla y León, Extremadura, and Galicia. A yellow weather alert is in effect for these regions. Meteorologists warn that the fog can appear and dissipate suddenly, making travel on highways even riskier.

In the coming days, forecasters do not rule out the continuation of challenging weather conditions. Drivers are advised to plan routes in advance, monitor traffic updates, and be prepared for sudden changes in the weather. Pay special attention to secondary roads, where snow removal equipment may not arrive as quickly as on main highways.
