
In September 2025, Spain saw a sharp surge in sales of electrified vehicles. A total of 22,205 new electric cars and plug-in hybrids were sold in a month, almost double the figure from the same period last year. These vehicles now account for more than a fifth of all new registrations.
Since the beginning of the year, Spaniards have purchased 172,376 electrified cars, almost twice as many as in the first nine months of 2024. The market share of these vehicles grew to 16.91%, up seven percentage points compared to last year.
When considering all alternative types of transport, including electrified, hybrid, and gas-powered models, sales in September reached 62,593 units. This represents a 42.1% increase year-on-year. Such vehicles now account for six out of ten new registrations. In the first nine months of 2025, Spain registered 572,004 alternative vehicles, 46.4% more than in the previous year. Their market share has risen to 56.12%.
The fully electric vehicle segment is also showing steady growth. In September, 11,229 new electric cars were registered, up 64.6% from last year. Over the course of the year, sales reached 81,539 units, an increase of 85.7%. Electric vehicles claimed 8% of the market over nine months.
Plug-in hybrids showed even more impressive growth. In September, their sales increased by 165.4%, reaching 10,976 units. Over the year, 90,837 such vehicles were sold, more than doubling last year’s figure. Plug-in hybrids accounted for 8.91% of the market.
Non-rechargeable hybrid cars also remain in demand. In September, their sales rose by 18%, reaching 35,500 units. Over nine months, 350,762 such vehicles were sold, up 27.5% year-on-year. Their market share is 34.91%.
Gas-powered cars also strengthened their position. In September, 4,888 such vehicles were sold, up 62.4% from last year. Over the year, Spaniards purchased 43,865 gas-powered cars, an increase of 76.9%. Their market share stands at 4.3%.
The passenger car market is also seeing significant growth in alternative models. In September, sales of hybrid, plug-in, and gas passenger cars rose by 40.2%, reaching 60,592 units. These vehicles have become the main choice for buyers, accounting for 71.14% of the market. Over the year, sales of alternative passenger models grew by 46.1%, reaching 556,409 units and taking 65.1% of the market.
In the plug-in passenger car segment, 20,479 vehicles were sold in September, almost double the figure from a year earlier. Their market share reached 24.05%, up 14 percentage points from last year. Sales of fully electric passenger cars increased by 59.7%, while plug-in hybrids grew by 155%.
In the first nine months of 2025, 158,743 electrified passenger cars were sold in Spain, nearly double the figure for the previous year. Their market share reached 18.57%.
