With the arrival of autumn, Spain is once again experiencing heavy rainfall, which has already led to serious consequences on the country’s roads. Recalling the devastating DANA that hit several regions on October 29, 2024, local residents and authorities are anxiously monitoring the forecasts. At that time, the disaster destroyed entire towns and resulted in numerous casualties.
Heavy rains not only create a risk of flooding but also significantly increase the danger for motorists. Within minutes, torrents of water can block highways, halt traffic, and trap people inside their vehicles. The National Traffic Administration emphasizes that sudden floods are among the most dangerous situations for all road users.
Special attention is paid not only to possible damage to vehicles but also to the direct threat to the lives of drivers and passengers. In response, experts have prepared clear instructions on what to do if a car becomes trapped in a flooded area.
The first step in such a situation is to unfasten your seat belt. After that, you should try to exit through the window—the safest method if the cabin begins to flood. If the water level has already reached the windows and they cannot be opened, it is recommended to use a sharp object to break the glass.
If breaking the glass is not possible, the next option is to exit through the door. However, it is important to remember: open the door in the direction of the water flow, otherwise the pressure from the water will prevent you from doing so quickly. After leaving the vehicle, experts advise climbing onto the roof of the car—this will keep you above the water level and make it easier for rescuers to spot you.
If you unexpectedly encounter a stream of water in your path, do not try to cross it by car. The depth may be much greater than it appears at first glance. The best solution is to look for an alternative route. Even if the water only reaches the middle of the wheel, the vehicle can be swept away by the current in seconds. Factors such as the car’s weight, ground clearance, current strength, and the terrain all play a role.
If you are unable to avoid the flooded area, exit the vehicle as quickly as possible. Following these recommendations will help minimize risks and increase your chances of survival during extreme weather conditions.
