Internal dynamics within Partido Popular (PP) are once again in the spotlight after Isabel Díaz Ayuso secured another significant victory. This time, she faced off with Attorney General Álvaro García Ortiz, who was forced to step down following a court ruling. This success not only strengthened Ayuso’s standing within the party but also highlighted her ability to shape the opposition’s political agenda.
Uncompromising Leadership
Ayuso continues to display independence and confidence, facing no serious resistance from fellow party members. Her trajectory recalls past episodes, including her open confrontation with then-leader Pablo Casado, which ultimately led to his resignation and the arrival of Alberto Núñez Feijóo. Each new challenge further boosts her authority, transforming both internal and external conflicts into opportunities to solidify her power.
The recent episode with the attorney general became a symbolic triumph, significantly enhancing her influence both within the PP and among party supporters. External clashes—whether with government officials, the country’s leader Pedro Sánchez, or political opponents from Vox—not only help her consolidate the electorate but also allow her to broaden her influence within right-wing circles.
A Delicate Game Among Allies
However, such prominent leadership is not always perceived unambiguously within the party itself. The PP leadership, based on Génova street, chose to present the resignation of the Attorney General as a collective victory, beneficial for the entire opposition and personally for Feijóo. Still, in their public appearances, neither Feijóo nor Ayuso were in a hurry to mention each other, highlighting an underlying rivalry and a lack of unified strategy.
Within the party, some voices suggest that Ayuso’s success could be used to pressure the central leadership and push her own agenda. Certain regional leaders believe her independence and ability to attract voters who previously supported Vox make her an indispensable figure, though not everyone is willing to back her approach. At the same time, Feijóo’s caution in dealing with Ayuso is explained by his desire to avoid repeating past mistakes and to preserve the party’s fragile balance.
Her own political ecosystem
Ayuso has managed to create a unique political platform within the PP, featuring its own rhetoric, a loyal base, and a distinctive management style. This allows her to act independently, sometimes even against the official party line. A striking example was the issue of registering doctors who refuse to perform abortions: after prolonged disagreements between the regional and central leadership, the party was eventually forced to back Ayuso’s decision, despite its contradiction with national legislation.
This approach has raised concerns among some members of the party elite, who see it as a threat to unity and discipline. However, Ayuso’s supporters point to her exceptional communication skills and her ability to leverage Madrid’s resources to achieve political goals. Her opponents often find themselves in a vulnerable position, leading to mistakes and a loss of initiative.
Ayuso Shapes the Future of the PP
Ayuso’s influence on the party’s development is becoming increasingly evident. Her victories over political rivals and her ability to set the agenda have made her a key figure for the future of the PP. At the same time, tensions between different power centers within the party persist, which could lead to new conflicts and reshuffling.
While Feijóo prefers to avoid open confrontation, an unspoken non-aggression pact has emerged within the party. Yet the question of who will become the true opposition leader and determine the strategy for the coming years remains unresolved. Ayuso continues to consolidate her influence, and her political style is becoming a model for many regional leaders seeking independence and success.
