Sony achieves record performance in the gaming device market
The Japanese corporation Sony reported its results for the second quarter of 2025, highlighting the significant success of its PlayStation 5 console. During this period, 3.9 million units were sold, slightly surpassing the figures from the same quarter last year. Total PS5 sales have reached 84.2 million units, underscoring the console’s sustained demand even several years after its launch.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has experienced a marked decline in interest for its products. Combined sales of the Xbox Series S and Series X for the same period were down 29% compared to a year earlier. This has further widened the gap between the two leading players in the home gaming console market.
Comparison with previous generations and pricing trends
Comparing with the previous generation, the PlayStation 4 sold 86.4 million units in the equivalent time after its release. The difference between PS4 and PS5 is only 2.2 million, but it’s important to note that five years ago, the PS4 was already significantly cheaper, while the current model has become more expensive. Nevertheless, demand for the PlayStation 5 remains high, reflecting the loyalty of its audience and the platform’s strong appeal.
For Microsoft, the situation is less favorable: sales of the Xbox Series S and X are 19% behind those of the Xbox One in the same period after launch. Even offering two different models did not help the company replicate the previous generation’s success.
Audience growth and rising game sales
In addition to its hardware successes, Sony highlighted the expansion of the PlayStation Network user base. The number of registered users has reached 119 million, an increase of 3 million compared to a year ago. Sales of PS4 and PS5 games also grew, with 80.3 million copies sold in the quarter, which is 2.6 million more than the previous year.
While Sony continues to strengthen its position, Microsoft is struggling to maintain interest in its consoles. Preliminary estimates put combined sales of Xbox Series S and X at around 33.68 million units. This means PlayStation 5 is selling about 2.5 times better, despite Microsoft offering two models in its lineup.
Market outlook and future development
If we consider only the Xbox Series X, assuming it accounts for half of all Xbox sales, the gap becomes even more pronounced: PS5 is selling four times as much. This trend shows that Sony is not only maintaining, but also expanding its lead in the home gaming console market.
Experts point out that the further development of the market will depend on pricing strategies, exclusive projects, and user engagement in online services. At this point, PlayStation 5 confidently holds the title of the most popular console of the current generation, while Sony continues to cement its lead in the video game industry.
