Starting January 1, 2026, a new requirement will come into effect for all drivers in Spain: traditional warning triangles will no longer be allowed on the country’s roads. They will be completely replaced by the modern V-16 emergency light, designed to enhance safety during forced stops.
The V-16 warning device has been permitted since 2023, but from 2026 its use will become mandatory for all vehicles. The device must be approved by the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT), feature geolocation, and connect to the digital DGT 3.0 platform. Only these compliant models are allowed for sale in the country.
Competition among sellers is already heating up in the market. The Chinese marketplace AliExpress has offered a certified Juju V-16 emergency light for less than 30 euros, which is significantly lower than the average price of similar devices in other stores, where it usually ranges from 45 to 50 euros. Seller Feliz Iluminación states that the device meets all DGT requirements, supports data transmission until 2038, and has already sold over 3,000 units, receiving high ratings from buyers.
Emergency light beacons can be obtained not only through online shops. Some auto repair shops and dealerships have started giving out the V-16 for free when customers undergo maintenance or buy a new car. This has become part of customer acquisition and retention programs, similar to how triangles or reflective vests were previously provided at no charge.
Violating the new rules will be punishable by a fine of up to €80 if a driver fails to use the V-16 during an emergency stop. Additionally, stepping onto the roadway without a reflective vest remains a serious offense and can result in a €200 fine and the loss of four driving license points.
