Who Will Be Exempt from the New V16 Warning Lamp Requirement in Spain from 2026?

Not Every Driver Needs to Buy the V16: Who Can Avoid the Device—and Why

Starting in 2026, Spain will require all vehicles to carry the new V16 emergency warning lamp. But not all drivers will need to have it. We explain who is exempt from these new rules and what it means for road users.

Starting January 1, 2026, new traffic regulations will come into force in Spain: the familiar emergency triangles will be phased out and replaced by the modern V16 warning light. This device will become the only officially approved way to signal a breakdown or accident on the road. Failure to have a V16 in the vehicle could lead to a fine of up to €200.

However, the new rules won’t affect everyone. According to the Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT), the requirement applies only to cars, buses, trucks, as well as mixed vehicles and articulated lorries registered in Spain. For these categories, a V16 will become mandatory.

At the same time, owners of vehicles with foreign license plates will be able to continue using standard emergency triangles. This is because other EU countries have yet to introduce similar changes, and emergency signaling requirements remain unchanged abroad.

Motorcycles, mopeds, quadricycles, and bicycles registered in Spain are also exempt from the new rules. They do not need a V16 and can travel on the roads without the device. Thus, a significant portion of road users is not required to purchase the new warning light.

As for installing the V16 beacon, it is recommended to place it at the highest point of the vehicle—usually the roof. If it is not possible to secure the device on the roof for any reason, it can be installed on the upper part of the side surface on the driver’s side. The lamp’s magnetic base makes it easy to attach to the vehicle’s metal surfaces.

Before purchasing a V16 beacon, it is important to make sure the device is certified by the DGT. Only such models are permitted for use in the country. The price varies by brand, but on average it costs around 50 euros. In recent months, there have been offers at reduced prices—some online stores are selling the V16 for under 40 euros.

The introduction of the new requirements is aimed at improving road safety and reducing the number of accidents. Nevertheless, the transition period will allow drivers to prepare for the changes and choose a suitable device in advance.
