David Villa, the former striker for Barcelona, Atlético, and Valencia, recently shared his thoughts on the events that shaped his football career. In a conversation with Mario Suárez, he noted that he did not realize the consequences of his decision to take the number seven in the national team after Raúl González’s departure.
According to Villa, he chose this number solely out of personal preference, without considering the possible reaction from fans and the press. It was only later that he understood how significant this move was for many football supporters in Spain. Villa admitted that had he known about the potential challenges, he might have chosen a different option, such as the number nine or ten, although seven had always been special to him.
Recalling the 2008 European Championship, Villa spoke about the disappointment he felt due to an injury in the semifinal. He was hurt while taking a free kick and immediately realized he wouldn’t be able to play in the final. Despite this, the forward emphasized that he is proud of his contribution to the team’s success and wouldn’t trade that experience, even for the chance to play in the decisive match.
Villa also commented on Lamine Yamal, the young talent of Barcelona and the Spain national team. In his view, the young player carries enormous responsibility, and if he were fully aware of the scale of his role, he might feel nervous.
A special place in Villa’s memories is occupied by Luis Aragonés, who led the national team to international triumph in 2008. Villa noted that the coach was convinced of the necessity of victory and saw any possible failure as a personal defeat.
Speaking about the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Villa recalled being substituted in the final group stage match, when Spain had already lost the chance to advance. He admitted that he took it very hard, realizing it might be his last appearance for the national team. Despite the disappointment, Villa emphasized that he holds no grudge against anyone from the coaching staff and is grateful for the opportunity to have played almost a hundred matches for the national team.
