In the world of Spanish high society, where differences are usually concealed behind impeccable manners, public disputes are a rare occurrence. Yet even the strongest social alliances sometimes crack, and a cold silence can speak louder than any words. Such a story is unfolding before our eyes in a triangle whose corners are Isabel Preysler, her daughter Tamara Falcó, and writer Boris Izaguirre. And in this drama, someone has certainly been left out in the cold.
The point of no return came in October 2022. The Marquesa de Griñón, speaking at a Catholic congress in Mexico, delivered a speech that many viewed as a jab at sexual diversity. Her remarks sparked a stormy reaction. Boris Izaguirre, a longtime family friend, could not stay silent and, in his column for one of the country’s leading newspapers, pointed out the homophobic undertones of the event. The response was immediate: Isabel and Tamara cut off all contact with him. The ensuing conflict was so intense that Falcó had to publicly clarify her position on a popular TV show and apologize to those who might have been hurt by her words.
Since then, Boris Izaguirre has been the most outspoken about the situation. He recalled how, back in 2000, he first met Isabel Preysler at her mansion in the upscale La Moraleja district, and how young Tamara, who was about to turn 18, saw him as a guide to the world she so aspired to enter. In recent months, the writer confirmed that the ice in his relationship with Isabel had begun to melt. They resumed their correspondence and telephone conversations. Moreover, Izaguirre even visited the new Madrid restaurant owned by Preysler’s son-in-law, Íñigo Onieva, where he was warmly welcomed by the owner himself, while Isabel offered advice over the phone on which dishes to order.
This thaw, however, has not affected his relationship with Tamara. Despite the conciliatory tone in Boris’s statements about the Marquise, there is a strong sense that this family knows how to forgive, but not to forget. The restoration of some contacts does not mean a return to former warmth. The final confirmation of the deep rift came during Izaguirre’s recent 60th birthday celebration. The party at his apartment in the prestigious Salamanca district gathered the cream of society, but Tamara Falcó was absent. When journalists directly asked the birthday celebrant whether she would attend, he simply shrugged, making it clear that he did not control the guest list and did not know whether she would come. This moment became a litmus test, clearly showing that the gulf between the former close friends remains unbridgeable.
