A Name with Royal Roots: Why Spanish Influencers Chose the Name Pelayo for Their Son

Popular influencers Bea Himeno and Nacho Aragón have become parents. They’ve chosen the historical name Pelayo for their son. Discover the royal origins and meaning behind it.

The popular Spanish bloggers Bea Jimeno and Nacho Aragón have welcomed a long-awaited addition to their family. Five months after announcing the pregnancy, the couple shared the news of their first child’s birth. The new mom posted a heartfelt video from the maternity ward on social media, describing October 26 as the best day of their lives. She spoke of feeling as if she was in an “indescribable cloud” and experiencing a profound sense of fulfillment. The new dad was just as emotional, calling the baby his best friend.

The boy was named Pelayo. As the couple revealed in an interview, it was the only name they both liked. They kept their nearly 200,000 followers updated on the pregnancy and the process of choosing a name for their baby. Bea regularly shared moments from her pregnancy and, shortly before giving birth, posted a video capturing the moment she found out about the positive test and told her husband the happy news—his reaction was filled with tears of joy.

The name Pelayo has deep historical and cultural roots. It originates from the Greek word ‘Pelagios’, meaning ‘of the sea’ or ‘one who comes from the sea’. The name gained popularity in Spain thanks to Don Pelayo, a noble Visigoth who became the first king of the Kingdom of Asturias after the famous Battle of Covadonga during the Reconquista. As a result, the name carries a powerful historical legacy and is associated with traits such as resilience, leadership, thoughtfulness, and perseverance.

Despite its historical significance, the name Pelayo is not very common today. In Spain, there are only about 5,378 men with this name, with an average age of just 22 years. It is most widespread in Asturias, where it has become one of the region’s symbols. You can also hear it in León, Palencia, Valladolid, Segovia, and Madrid.

The love story of little Pelayo’s parents began thirteen years ago in Florida, where they were both studying. Their romantic relationship blossomed into a strong union, and in 2024, they made it official with a lavish wedding on Mallorca, surrounded by family and friends. Shortly before their son was born, Bea fondly recalled their wedding day, noting how quickly time had passed and that the best moment of their lives now awaited them.
