In recent months, Spain has seen a rise in car-related fraud cases. Criminals are using a new scheme known as the ‘jack scam.’ The essence of the scam is that fraudsters, posing as mechanics, approach drivers, claim their car has a serious malfunction, and offer their assistance.
Usually, the criminals target victims in parking lots or near busy roads. They approach the driver and say they’ve noticed a suspicious noise or another problem with the car. They then offer to inspect the vehicle and insist that continuing to drive could be dangerous.
To convince the car owner that repairs are necessary, the fraudsters use a hydraulic jack. They lift the car, pretend to inspect it thoroughly, and then report a supposedly serious fault. After that, they offer to fix the ‘problem’ immediately for a hefty fee—often amounting to hundreds or even thousands of euros.
In most cases, there is no real malfunction. The scammers prey on the driver’s confusion and trust, who, fearing for their safety, agrees to the unnecessary services. After receiving the money, the criminals quickly disappear, leaving the victim with nothing.
Spanish police are warning: do not accept help from strangers, especially when it comes to money. If someone insists on urgent repairs and demands payment in cash or by transfer, it is best to refuse and contact a trusted auto repair shop. It is also recommended to stay calm and not give in to pressure.
Experts advise being especially vigilant in parking lots of shopping centers, supermarkets, and gas stations — these are the most common places for scammers to operate. If you find yourself in such a situation, try to remember the appearance of the offenders and report the incident to the police.
Drivers are advised to regularly check their vehicle’s technical condition at official service centers and not to trust strangers offering help on the road. If in doubt, it is better to contact the road service or call a tow truck.
The spread of such fraudulent schemes highlights the importance of vigilance and caution on Spanish roads. By following simple safety rules, you can avoid financial losses and unpleasant situations.
