This year, San Sebastián de los Reyes once again becomes the center of Madrid’s Christmas traditions. Here, in the Francisco Martín building, the region’s largest nativity scene has opened, attracting thousands of visitors each year. The exhibit spans over 145 square meters and features 538 handcrafted figures. Every element is the result of meticulous work by more than 70 enthusiasts who have spent months creating this unique festive landscape.
From the very first steps into the hall, visitors encounter not just an exhibition, but a true immersion in the spirit of Christmas. Light, sound, the murmur of water, and carefully planned scenography turn an ordinary stroll into a real journey through biblical stories. This year, special attention is given to Saint Francis of Assisi (San Francisco de Asís), honored in a dedicated section. He is regarded as the founder of the nativity scene tradition eight centuries ago.
A tradition that unites generations
This nativity scene has a 28-year history. Each season, a team of volunteers starts from scratch to surprise visitors with new designs and fresh ideas. This year, more than 8,000 hours of work went into creating the display. The nativity features 538 fired clay figures, all hand-painted, and numerous scenes that recreate key moments of Christmas.
The installation uses 50 cubic meters of moss and sand, as well as two artificial ponds with a closed-cycle system circulating over 800 liters of water. A special lighting system simulates day and night, creating a unique atmosphere and allowing visitors to appreciate the details at different times of day. The entire structure is held together by 18,000 screws, and two tons of cork were used for the decorations.
Opening hours and free entry
The nativity scene is open to visitors until January 6, 2026. Admission is free for everyone. The exhibit is open on weekdays from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and on weekends and holidays from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. On special days—December 25, January 1 and 6—the doors are open from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The nativity scene is closed on December 24 and 31.
Morning tours are available for organized groups and institutions, but must be booked in advance by email. During these tours, guests can follow specially designed routes inside the exhibition and view all the details from various angles.
