Return of the King Why Juan Carlos I Is Staying in Spain Longer Than Usual

Sailing events in Galicia prompt changes in the former Spanish monarch’s plans

Juan Carlos I postpones his flight to Abu Dhabi once again. His participation in regattas in Sanxenxo sparks interest in Spain. The decision is linked to an award in France and changes in his schedule.

For Spaniards, the movements of Juan Carlos I always spark discussion, as his every appearance in the country is tied to changes in public life and renewed attention to the monarchy. This time, the former king is once again in the spotlight: his return to Abu Dhabi has been postponed due to his participation in prestigious regattas in Galicia and receiving a literary award in France. This highlights how the personal decisions of the ex-monarch can shape the public agenda and spark debate not only in Spain but also beyond its borders.

Juan Carlos I is currently in Paris, where he is being awarded a prize at the National Assembly of France for his memoir ‘Reconciliación’. The book, originally published in French and later in Spanish, has stirred intense debate in French society because the ceremony is being held in the country’s parliament. Although the award is presented by the private association Lire la Société, the fact that the former Spanish monarch is being honored in such a venue has become a topic of discussion. After the ceremony in Paris, Juan Carlos I plans to spend time with his daughters, Infantas Elena and Cristina, as well as his grandson Froilán Marichalar, who lives with his grandfather in Abu Dhabi.

Public appearances and new itineraries

This is already Juan Carlos I’s second public appearance in a short time: he recently attended bullfights in Seville, where the crowd greeted him with applause, and photos with famous toreros quickly spread through the media. After the Paris ceremony, as El Pais notes, the former king is in no hurry to return to the Emirates, where he has lived since 2020 after Spanish and Swiss prosecutors launched investigations, later closed. Instead, he will head to Sanxenxo to take part in yacht regattas with the ‘Bribón’ at the club run by his long-time friend Pedro Campos.

Juan Carlos I had previously planned to visit Galicia for the season’s first races, but had to cancel the trip due to the military conflict between the US and Israel against Iran and the closure of airspace in the region. Now, despite all the difficulties, he intends to compete. Last year, the ‘Bribón’ crew under his leadership became world champions in the 6-metre class in New York, and this March the yacht won again, although the king himself did not participate that time.

Medical appointments and private meetings

According to his entourage, Juan Carlos I’s stay in Spain may also include medical check-ups with specialists in Vitoria, where he regularly visits dentist Eduardo Anitua and traumatologist Mikel Sanchez. These visits have become a routine part of his schedule during his trips back home. It is expected that after completing all events and meetings, no earlier than April 20, the former monarch will return to Abu Dhabi. His entourage says he considers it important to remain there, given the ongoing tensions in the Middle East, to express his gratitude to his Emirati hosts.

Juan Carlos I’s current visit to Europe has been the longest since his move to the Persian Gulf. During this time, he has not only been to Paris and Seville, but also visited Lisbon, where he stayed with an old family friend. For travel within Europe, the former king uses a private jet provided by Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed, while for longer distances he prefers commercial flights. His last visit to Spain was in November last year, when he attended a family lunch marking the 50th anniversary of the restoration of the monarchy.

Public reaction and debate

Each return of Juan Carlos I to Spain sparks discussions in society and the media. His participation in sports and cultural events, as well as meetings with officials and prominent figures—as seen in Seville at journalist Carlos Herrera’s dinner attended by Andalusia’s president Juan Manuel Moreno—provide grounds for renewed debates about the former monarch’s role in modern Spain. Questions regarding his status, the reasons for his prolonged stay abroad, and the possibility of his return remain relevant for many Spaniards.

Interestingly, Spain regularly sees debates over symbolic gestures and decisions tied to history and reconciliation. For instance, there was a recent initiative to change the lighting in university bathrooms in Lleida to combat drug use—you can read more about this in the article on unusual measures at Catalan universities. Such topics show that society is concerned not only with major political events but also with everyday details that shape public perceptions of change.

In recent years, Spain has often become the stage for notable comebacks and public appearances by former state figures. For example, Juan Carlos I’s attendance at sporting events or the international awards he receives always attract significant public attention. Such occasions frequently spark debates about the place of the monarchy in a modern nation, as well as the boundaries between the private lives and public status of former leaders. The surge of interest in these topics shows that issues of historical memory and symbolic gestures remain central in Spanish society.
