Just a few minutes’ drive from the capital of the province, there is an area that looks as if it came straight out of a Western film. Crimson sheer cliffs, unusual landforms, and sun-scorched earth create a panorama reminiscent of classic Hollywood scenery. It’s no wonder this spot has become a real mecca for photographers and lovers of unique walks.
This is the Rambla de Barrachina, a gorge located near the village of Villaspesa. A circular hiking trail runs here, allowing visitors to fully enjoy the views, often referred to as the “Red Canyon” of the region. The adventure combines a sense of exploration with breathtaking scenery.
This giant ravine is the result of millennia of wind and water shaping the landscape. The elements have carved vertical walls and mountains in shades of orange out of the soft rock, creating a landscape strikingly similar to those found in the New World. Its location between Villaspesa and Villastar makes it easily accessible, though no less impressive, as few expect to encounter such scenery so close to the city.
It is a real treasure for those seeking unconventional views in this part of the kingdom. The gorge offers not only an arid and distinctive environment, but also the chance to observe vultures soaring above its slopes, adding to the appeal of the visit. However, it is not suitable for rock climbing or canyoning.
One of the best ways to discover this marvel is on foot. The 12-kilometer circular trail begins at the N-330 highway, where there is a designated parking area. From there, the path leads to the bed of a dried-up river and gradually ascends to the highest point of the route — the Muela plateau.
The hike is not particularly difficult, but the rocky and sandy terrain calls for sturdy athletic footwear. Since the entire route offers neither shade nor sources of water, it is essential to plan your trip with the weather in mind. In summer, avoid the hottest hours and always carry enough food and water. Another factor to consider is the frequent strong gusts of wind, which mean extra caution is needed near cliffs — especially if you are traveling with children.
Beyond the gorge itself, the surroundings of Villaspesa offer other attractions. The small village is home to the Church of the Savior — a modernist temple built in 1912. It is considered unique in the province. Its quiet streets, with traditional architecture, are perfect for a leisurely stroll after an active day outdoors.
If you wish to extend your trip, the administrative center is just ten minutes away. There, visitors will find Mudejar heritage recognized as a World Heritage Site, the Mausoleum of the Lovers, and the Dinópolis paleontological park — making the visit a well-rounded experience that combines culture, history, and active leisure all in one trip.
