Many residents of Spain who have to spend a significant part of their day behind the wheel often experience discomfort in their back. Prolonged sitting in the same position, especially without sufficient lumbar support, leads to tension in both the cervical and lumbar regions of the spine.
Although modern cars are increasingly equipped with ergonomic seats, back pain remains a common issue for many drivers and passengers. The cause is often improper body posture, which is difficult to maintain throughout the journey.
Osteopath Michael Fatica, co-founder of The Back in Shape Program, noted that even simple solutions can significantly improve the situation. In his opinion, all you need to reduce strain on your back is an ordinary towel in the car. If there is no special lumbar support in the seat, a rolled-up towel placed between the lower back and the seat back can provide extra support.
This approach helps maintain the natural curve of the lumbar spine, promoting better posture while driving. Even a minor change in back support can noticeably reduce pain caused by long periods of driving.
In addition, the expert advises paying attention to seat height: it is important to have a clear view of the road, but you should avoid leaning back too much. This allows you to turn your head freely without straining your neck muscles. It is also recommended to ensure that your thighs are level with your knees, which reduces the risk of discomfort.
Another tip is to change your sitting position in the seat from time to time to distribute pressure on the intervertebral discs more evenly. During stops, it is helpful to stretch each leg in turn, holding the position for about half a minute on each side. Such simple actions can greatly improve the well-being of drivers and passengers, reducing the likelihood of developing chronic pain.
