The inland areas of Valencia offer an excellent alternative for those seeking a getaway far from the crowded coastline. In the municipality of Chella, located in the La Canal de Navarrés comarca, there is a natural gem—an impressive waterfall that has become the symbol of this region.
The main attraction, the Salto de Chella waterfall, is a 25-meter cascade of the Sellent River plunging into a natural pool with crystal-clear water. Surrounded by lush vegetation and boasting its own microclimate, this spot creates an idyllic setting for nature lovers. The waterfall is easy to reach: the path begins at Parque de la Fuente and follows a well-marked trail.
The surroundings also offer a wealth of interesting sites. Visitors can see the ruins of an old hydroelectric plant, remnants of a mill, explore the cueva que llueve (which means “weeping cave”), and a corner known as El Paraíso. These sites add both historical and natural value to the walk. Many tourists combine a visit to the waterfall with a circular hiking route starting in the nearby town of Bolbaite and following the Sellent River, requiring no special physical training.
This destination is perfect for a day trip, especially during the warmer seasons. In addition to swimming in the natural pool, the area offers a variety of activities: easy hikes, landscape photography, or simply watching the falling water from the viewpoint. The waterfall is also part of longer routes that connect it with Bolbaite and other points in the valley.
Beyond its natural beauty, the town of Chella itself is worth visiting. In its old quarter, the street layout from the Muslim era has been preserved, and you can still see traditional building facades. The town’s architectural centerpiece is the parish church of the Virgen de Gracia (Iglesia Parroquial de la Virgen de Gracia), known for its distinctive blue-tiled dome and bell tower. The church was restored in the 18th century after the 1763 earthquake.
To get a fuller sense of the area, visit the Fuente park, home to a traditional washhouse set among greenery—an ideal spot for walks with children. Other points of interest include the Alto de Esparza windmill (Molino de Viento del Alto de Esparza) and Playa Salvaje, a small, equipped river bathing area. All this makes Chella an appealing destination where scenery, history, and tranquility blend harmoniously.
