During the 2007 Formula 1 season, a situation unfolded within the McLaren team that still sparks debate among fans and experts. At the time, Fernando Alonso, racing for the British outfit, chose to thank his mechanics in an unusual way during the race weekend at the Nurburgring circuit.
On the first day of the race weekend, the Spanish driver asked his engineer to prepare a list of all employees involved with his car. The list included not only the main mechanics, but also specialists handling fuel, tires, and even the storeroom manager. The reason for this request remained a mystery up until the moment they met.
Later, Alonso invited everyone on the list to one of the garage areas. There, he personally handed each of them an envelope containing a thousand euros.
