Following the ‘Oil Train’: A Unique Journey Along Córdoba’s Historic Railway

A Forgotten Railway Becomes Spain's Most Beautiful Walking Route: Discover This Hidden Paradise for Travelers

An extraordinary route winds through southern Córdoba, tracing an old railway line. This path weaves together history, nature, and culture. Discover the soul of Andalusia.

In the very heart of southern Andalusia, where olive groves stretch as far as the eye can see, lies a unique route that offers a journey back in time. This is not just a trail—it’s a former railway line that once served as a vital artery powering the region’s economy. Today, rails and sleepers have given way to a comfortable path for walkers and cyclists, but the spirit of the past lingers at every step. Welcome to the Vía Verde de la Subbética—a route spanning over 57 kilometers, inviting travelers to explore the history, nature, and charming white villages of Córdoba province.

The path follows the legendary ‘Olive Oil Train’ (Tren del Aceite), which until 1985 linked Linares to Puente Genil, transporting the region’s precious olive oil to ports in the south of the peninsula. Today, this journey is accessible to anyone eager to discover the less-traveled side of Andalusia. The terrain is nearly flat, with a quality surface of asphalt and compacted earth, making it perfect for family outings, leisurely bike rides, and easy hikes without any serious physical challenge.

Tracing the footsteps of an industrial past

One of the route’s main highlights is its rich engineering heritage. Travelers cross four impressive metal viaducts built in the 19th century, which seem to soar above gorges and rivers. These airy structures are true monuments of industrial architecture. The route also runs through a 139-meter tunnel carved into the rock, adding a sense of adventure. Along the entire way, former railway stations and keepers’ cottages have been preserved. Many have been carefully restored and given new life. For example, the station in the town of Cabra now houses the “Oil Train” Interpretation Center, where you can explore the history of the line and its importance to the region. Other stations have been transformed into cozy restaurants and rest areas where visitors can relax and enjoy local cuisine.

A journey through a UNESCO Geopark

The route crosses the Natural Park of Sierras Subbéticas, a UNESCO-protected Geopark. This means the local landscapes are of exceptional geological value. The scenery is ever-changing: endless olive groves give way to vineyards, set against striking limestone mountains in unusual shapes. The trail passes unique natural landmarks, such as the Salobral Lagoon—an important birdwatching site where rare species can be spotted. The path blends seamlessly into its surroundings, allowing you to enjoy the quiet broken only by birdsong and the rustling leaves. It’s a perfect chance to escape the city bustle and reconnect with nature.

The charm of Andalusia’s ‘white villages’

The Greenway is not just about nature and history—it’s also a journey into culture. It links several picturesque Andalusian pueblos blancos (white villages), each with its own unique charm. Highlights include Luque with its medieval castle, the idyllic Zuheros nestled at the foot of a cliff, as well as Doña Mencía, Cabra, and Lucena. Wandering their narrow, cobbled streets adorned with flower pots feels like stepping back in time. Here you can experience local traditions, sample authentic tapas, and simply enjoy the relaxed pace of life. For the most adventurous, the journey doesn’t have to end here: in the neighboring province of Jaén, the route connects with the Olive Oil Greenway, forming a continuous 112-kilometer trail—the longest in Andalusia. This makes it the perfect destination for a multi-day hike or cycling tour, full of discoveries.
