At the height of the summer season, when temperatures in Seville reach their peak, many residents seek relief from the heat not on the coast, but in the mountains. In the heart of the Sierra Morena Natural Park (Sierra Morena) lies a place that has become a true oasis for thousands. This is a river beach, offering coolness and outdoor recreation just a hundred kilometers from the Andalusian capital, serving as an excellent alternative to seaside resorts.
This popular beach is located in the municipality of San Nicolás del Puerto (San Nicolás del Puerto). It was artificially created back in 1974 with the installation of sluices on the río Galindón, which made it possible to form a swimming area about 300 meters long. Its main attraction, giving the place a special charm, is an ancient Roman bridge, under whose shade visitors relax. Entry to the beach is free, and its banks are equipped with picnic areas and small bars, making it ideal for families.
In summer, the small settlement of San Nicolás del Puerto, with a permanent population of only about 600 people, is completely transformed. Thanks to the influx of vacationers, its population increases many times over. The town retains its authentic Andalusian character with its whitewashed houses and the old iglesia mudéjar de San Sebastián. The tranquil atmosphere and picturesque scenery turn an ordinary day by the water into an unforgettable experience.
The appeal of this destination goes far beyond beach holidays. The surrounding area is rich in natural and cultural attractions. Nearby, there are two unique natural landmarks: Cerro del Hierro, with its karst landscape reminiscent of a Western movie set, and the cascadas del Huéznar, an impressive cascade of waterfalls. In addition, the ‘Vía Verde de la Sierra Norte’ tourist trail runs through the region, and local gastronomy offers a chance to discover traditional dishes. All of this makes San Nicolás del Puerto an ideal destination for those seeking a blend of nature, culture, and refreshment.
