Zumaia: The Unique Basque Coast Where Flysch Cliffs Hold Earth’s History and Await Tourists in 2025

La ciudad de «Juego de Tronos» donde las playas curan y los acantilados cuentan historias de dinosaurios.

Discover Zumaia, the gem of the Gipuzkoa coastline. Here, you’ll find unique flysch geological formations, a medieval center with a Gothic church, healing iodine-rich beaches, and the famous chapel perched on a cliff—an iconic symbol of the Basque Country.

On the coast of the Cantabrian Sea, in the province of Gipuzkoa, lies the seaside town of Zumaia, which seamlessly combines natural wonders, a rich historical heritage, and vibrant traditions. Surrounded by green mountains descending to the ocean, it offers visitors everything for a perfect getaway: from cultural discoveries to beach relaxation. Convenient rail connections to San Sebastián make it easily accessible for travelers.

Zumaia’s main natural attraction is the flysch—a unique geological formation made up of alternating layers of sedimentary rock. These cliffs, resembling the pages of a stone book, hold more than 60 million years of Earth’s history, including evidence of mass extinctions and global climate changes. The best place to experience this phenomenon is Itzurun beach, where the ‘Ruta del Flysch’ hiking trail begins. The cliffs are especially impressive at low tide, when the rugged ocean floor is revealed.

Above Itzurun beach, atop a cliff, stands the ermita de San Telmo, offering breathtaking views of the sea. This landscape has become one of the most recognizable symbols not only of the town, but of the whole Basque coastline. Itzurun beach is famous not only for its views, but also for its high iodine content in the water, which is believed to have health benefits. On the other side of town is the quieter playa de Santiago, located near the mouth of the Urola River and the Museo Zuloaga.

The historic center of Zumaia has preserved its medieval layout. Its dominant feature is the Gothic church of San Pedro (iglesia de San Pedro), built in the 13th century and reminiscent of a fortress with its imposing structure. Inside, the main altar was created by the sculptor Juan de Antxieta (Juan de Antxieta) and is recognized as a national monument. Strolling through the old streets also reveals the palaces of Zumaia and Ubillos (palacios de Zumaia y Ubillos), as well as other historic buildings.

Zumaia’s picturesque landscapes have often caught the attention of filmmakers. Scenes from the popular Spanish comedy ‘8 apellidos vascos’ and the internationally acclaimed series ‘Juego de tronos’ were filmed here. The town also carefully preserves its maritime traditions, which come to life during local festivals dedicated to San Pedro and especially San Telmo, the patron saint of sailors. During these days, the streets fill with music, regattas, parades, and concerts, and locals wear traditional blue attire.
