On Tuesday morning, a tragedy occurred at La Punta beach in the town of Roses (Girona province): a 79-year-old French woman died while swimming. The incident happened around 11 a.m. when the woman lost consciousness in the water. On-duty lifeguards immediately rendered aid, but were unable to save her.
At the time of the incident, the beach was patrolled by lifeguards and swimming conditions were considered safe — a green flag was flying above the beach. The emergency services received the call at 10:51. Medical personnel, including a ground team and a helicopter, arrived at the scene, but resuscitation efforts were unsuccessful.
After the death was confirmed, Catalonia police joined the investigation to clarify the circumstances of the incident. The exact cause of death will be determined following a forensic examination at the Girona Institute of Legal Medicine.
This incident marks the 18th fatality on Catalan beaches since the official swimming season began on June 15. Compared to the same period last year, the number of deaths has risen by four. Among the victims are three women and one child. At least three of the deceased were French citizens.
The highest number of tragedies has been recorded on the Barcelona coast—seven cases—while six deaths occurred on the Costa Brava, and another five on the beaches of Tarragona. Authorities emphasize that most incidents happen seemingly under favorable conditions, when lifeguards are on duty and there are no swimming bans in place.
Civil protection services remind everyone to exercise caution near the water, especially older people and those with health issues. It is recommended not to enter the water too abruptly, to choose equipped beaches, and to swim with companions whenever possible. These simple measures can significantly reduce the risk of tragedy on the coast.
With the start of the summer season, the authorities in Catalonia have stepped up prevention efforts and are informing visitors about water safety rules. Despite this, statistics show that the issue remains relevant and requires special attention from both tourists and locals.
