Spain is entering a long-awaited period of stable weather as a powerful anticyclone settles over the country ahead of the December holidays. After a series of stormy days marked by wind, snow, and high waves, residents and visitors can finally breathe easy. The atmospheric fronts that recently brought rain and thunderstorms are giving way to clear skies and a noticeable warming trend.
On Thursday, on the eve of the long weekend, several provinces were still under adverse weather alerts. Snow, strong gusts of wind, and rough seas lingered over the north and northwest of the country. Galicia and the Cantábrico coast were hit especially hard, with overcast skies and persistent rainfall. However, the situation began to change by Friday: clouds gradually cleared, and temperatures started to rise steadily.
Warmer weather and sunshine
With the arrival of the anticyclone, Spain experienced a noticeable warm-up. In coastal areas of the Mediterranean and Andalucía, temperatures climbed to 20–22 degrees Celsius—a true rarity for December. The inland regions did not miss out either: while nights remain chilly, daytime temperatures are well above seasonal norms. Little to no precipitation is expected, and skies across most of the country will stay clear or only lightly clouded.
On Friday, some residual showers are still possible in the northwest and in certain parts of Cantabria, where brief downpours with thunderstorms and even hail may occur in places. However, by evening the weather will stabilize, gray clouds will give way to sunshine. In contrast, the east and south of the country will see the day begin with clear skies, which will only become more pronounced by the weekend.
Saturday: changes ahead
Saturday marks a turning point as the anticyclone firmly establishes itself over the Iberian Peninsula. Galicia may still see occasional showers, but elsewhere the weather promises sunshine and warmth. The Balearic Islands (Islas Baleares) and the entire Mediterranean coast can expect mostly clear skies, with temperatures remaining above seasonal averages.
In central and southern regions, temperatures will climb to 18–20 degrees, creating perfect conditions for outdoor activities and relaxation. Cities and resorts are expecting an influx of tourists, and café and restaurant owners are already preparing for more visitors.
Sunday: stability
Sunday will be marked by persistent anticyclonic weather. With the exception of Galicia, where isolated showers are possible, the rest of Spain will be under the influence of dry, warm air. Clear skies and a lack of precipitation will allow locals and visitors to fully enjoy the holiday weekend.
Temperatures will remain high, and nighttime frosts will be rare even in inland areas. However, morning fog is possible in lowlands and valleys, which could complicate road conditions. Drivers are advised to be especially cautious, particularly in the first hours after sunrise.
Tourism and recreation
Favorable weather during the December holidays could be great news for the tourism sector. Many Spaniards and foreign visitors are expected to travel across the country to take advantage of the rare opportunity to enjoy mild winter weather. Coastal cities and historic centers, where you can stroll without worrying about rain, will be especially popular.
At the same time, despite the overall warming, nights in central regions will remain cool. Anyone planning nighttime walks or trips is advised not to forget warm clothing. During the day, however, you can count on sunshine and comfortable temperatures.
