For the first time, Barcelona is hosting a large-scale event dedicated to the issue of age discrimination. Specialists, artists, and officials have gathered in the Parliament Diputació Hall to discuss how to change society’s attitude toward aging and employment of older people.
The two-day forum, which began on October 14, features discussions, workshops, and experience sharing. The organizers aim not only to draw attention to ageism but also to develop concrete steps to overcome it. Among the guests are Diputació president Lluïsa Moret and well-known actresses, who shared their perspectives on the situation in the artistic community.
Special attention is given to how age stereotypes affect access to employment and participation in public life. Forum participants are analyzing why bias against the elderly has become an almost invisible part of everyday life, and how this is reflected at the municipal level. The event covers not only challenges but also successful examples of inclusive practices in various cities across Catalonia.
The second part of the forum will take place on November 7. This time, the focus will be on sharing experiences between municipalities and discussing new initiatives. The agenda includes discussions on urban planning, digital technologies, intergenerational projects, and opportunities for seniors to actively participate in society. Organizers hope that the forum will become a regular platform for finding solutions and setting new standards in attitudes toward aging.
Experts remind us: ageism is not just a matter of personal prejudice, but a structural problem affecting politics, the economy, and culture. The forum in Barcelona aims to raise awareness of this issue and make it a current topic for all levels of government and society.
