Another round of a high-profile court case is unfolding in the Spanish capital. This time, attention is focused on the wife of the country’s prime minister, who has been summoned to court for clarification of charges in a case involving alleged embezzlement. An unusual decision was made by the court authorities: Begoña Gómez will be able to enter the building not through the main entrance, but via the garage. The measure was explained as necessary to ensure her safety, given the tense atmosphere surrounding the proceedings.
The court hearing is scheduled for Saturday evening. In addition to Gómez herself, her former adviser and the government representative in Madrid have also been summoned. All of them will take part in a session where the exact charges will be determined, along with possible further actions by both sides. On the same day, a large protest is expected outside the courthouse, organized by a civic movement opposing corruption.
The court authorities have decided to restrict media access to the building. Journalists are permitted to remain only on a single floor, and only representatives of several major agencies will be allowed to report from inside. At the same time, defense lawyers will enter through a separate entrance, rather than alongside their clients.
Meanwhile, the court continues to review appeals related to other episodes in the case. These involve not only possible embezzlement, but also suspicions of abuse of office, illegal influence, and other offenses. This entire story has already sparked widespread public reaction and has become one of the most discussed topics in Spanish politics at the start of 2025.
