Blue City Chelva – A Historic Gem in the Province of Valencia

A city of three cultures where time stands still: this hidden gem lies beneath Valencia

Just a short distance from Valencia lies a remarkable town that preserves the heritage of three great cultures. Its winding streets and stunning landscapes captivate travelers. Discover this one-of-a-kind destination.

Just an hour’s drive from the bustling and vibrant capital of the namesake region lies a true hidden gem—recognized as a site of cultural interest. Welcome to Chelva, an enclave where eras and faiths are woven together and the old walls preserve memories of a Berber past. This is the perfect destination for those seeking off-the-beaten-path adventures, eager to soak up the atmosphere of old Spain and capture magazine-worthy photos.

The roots of this place go back to the Bronze Age, as evidenced by finds from Iberian and Roman settlements. But Chelva owes its true fame to the unique coexistence of three great civilizations: Muslim, Jewish, and Christian. This rich and multifaceted past can be felt at every turn, in every cobblestone underfoot. No wonder the entire historic center has been declared a protected site, made up of several neighborhoods distinguished by their intricate, mysterious, and winding layout.

A walk through Chelva is like traveling back in time. The Benacacira quarter, a former Andalusian medina from the 11th–12th centuries, draws you into a maze of narrow streets where it’s easy to imagine life centuries ago. This area has preserved architectural features typical of Moorish culture. In contrast, the Christian district of Ollerías, which emerged in the 14th century, offers a completely different atmosphere. Its name comes from the pottery kilns that once billowed smoke here. The streets are wider and more orderly. Meanwhile, the Jewish quarter of Azoque is full of mysterious alleys, retaining the medieval Muslim street layout. In the Mudejar-Morisco district of Arrabal, whose appearance took shape in the 14th century and has reached us almost unchanged, you can find tranquility amid the gentle whisper of water in the irrigation canals and the cool shade of ancient arches.

Beyond its man-made beauty, the surroundings of Chelva are famous for their natural attractions. One of the main draws for tourists is the trail along the Peña Cortada aqueduct. The path starts just ten minutes from town and takes about four hours to complete. This hike offers a seamless blend of history, engineering, and nature. Travelers encounter caves carved directly into the rock, hidden passages, and impressive tunnels. The route passes through the municipalities of Chelva and Calles, giving visitors an up-close look at one of the most important hydraulic structures in the Valencian Community.

For those who prefer a more relaxed walk, the ‘Water Route’ is the perfect choice. This two-hour circular trail winds along the Chelva River, revealing numerous springs and fountains. Along the way, there are rest areas, including the Molino-Puerto site with picnic spots, sports facilities, and children’s playgrounds. Be sure to visit La Playeta, with its waterfalls and lagoon—an idyllic spot for a swim on a hot day.

Reaching this picturesque corner from the regional capital is easy: simply follow the CV-35 highway toward Ademuz and you’ll arrive in under an hour. Traveling by car from Madrid or Barcelona takes about four hours, but the unforgettable sights along the way are well worth the journey.
