Chase in Madrid Arrest After Dangerous Manoeuvre With Child in Car

Two arrested after car theft with child inside in Madrid

In Madrid, police arrested a couple after pursuing a stolen car with a two-year-old girl inside. The incident raised concern due to the threat to the child’s safety. Authorities are stepping up measures against such crimes.

Events in Madrid have once again drawn attention to road safety and driver responsibility. An incident in one of the city’s busy districts on the evening in question may change how authorities approach monitoring car thefts and police chases. The spotlight was not only on a bold attempt to escape law enforcement, but also on the life-threatening risks faced by a young child caught at the center of these events.

According to El Pais, on the evening of March 9, Madrid police officers spotted a suspicious car parked at the Islazul shopping center in the Carabanchel district. This area was already under police patrol due to a spike in ‘siembra’ thefts, a tactic where criminals distract drivers to steal valuables from the car. A license plate check confirmed the vehicle was reported stolen. When officers switched on their lights and sirens, the driver tried to flee, initiating a dangerous high-speed chase through city streets.

A dangerous pursuit

The chase began on Vía Lusitana and continued along the M-40 ring road towards the A-3. The car sped aggressively, making sharp maneuvers, overtaking vehicles on the shoulder, and endangering others on the road. At one exit, the driver rammed a police vehicle trying to block his path, repeating this action multiple times. In the Embajadores area, the suspect ran several red lights and even drove into oncoming traffic, further raising the risk of an accident.

At the end of the chase, the car drove onto the sidewalk near one of the city squares, where a tire burst. After that, a man and a woman, both Peruvian citizens born in 1999, left the car, took a two-year-old girl in their arms, and tried to escape into the Entrevías woodland area in the south of Puente de Vallecas. Police quickly located the fugitives, who were attempting to hide by lying on the ground.

Arrest and aftermath

During the arrest, the man, who is the child’s father, threw the girl towards the police officers to distract them. The officers managed to catch the child, preventing any injuries. The man resisted arrest and struck police officers. According to El Pais, he already had convictions for theft and did not have a driver’s license at the time of the incident. He is charged with dangerous driving, unlawful appropriation of a vehicle, causing bodily harm, and driving without a license. The woman with him is also implicated in the case as an accomplice.

After the arrest, the biological mother of the girl arrived at the scene and took the child. The incident sparked debate among Madrid residents, who are concerned about the rising number of such incidents. City authorities have announced plans to tighten parking controls and toughen penalties for crimes related to car theft and dangerous driving.

Context and emerging challenges

This incident serves as another reminder of the constant need to monitor road safety in the capital. In recent years, Madrid has seen an increase in incidents involving car thefts and aggressive driver behavior. According to russpain.com, such occurrences often result in stricter police measures and require a review of response protocols.

Recently, another high-profile case occurred in Spain, when an accident on the highway in Córdoba resulted in one fatality and injuries to five people, including a young woman. This incident, like the tragedy on the highway in Andalucía, has once again raised the issue of tightening road safety controls and driver responsibility.

In recent years, Spain has seen a rise in cases where children end up in dangerous traffic situations due to the actions of adults. In 2025, a similar incident happened in Barcelona, when a child was found inside a car stolen during a robbery attempt. Authorities regularly remind the public of the importance of following traffic rules and the need for heightened attention to the safety of minors. Such incidents prompt authorities to reconsider preventive measures and impose tougher penalties on violators.
