As December arrives, Málaga sheds its image as a beach resort and adorns itself in a dazzling cloak of millions of lights. The city fills with the anticipation of the holidays, and the air is scented with pine and sweets. The streets turn into stages for concerts and performances, while colorful Christmas markets spring up in squares and along the promenades. It’s the perfect time for a leisurely stroll through the capital of the Costa del Sol and to immerse yourself in the atmosphere of a true Spanish Christmas—a celebration sure to enchant both adults and children. In 2025, the city is once again ready to delight residents and visitors with a wide variety of festive venues.
The heart of Christmas in Málaga
The main hub of the festivities is traditionally the market on Paseo del Parque. It’s more than just a market—it transforms into a full-fledged Christmas village, nestled in the shade of centuries-old palms and exotic plants. Over ninety wooden stalls line the walkway, offering visitors everything needed for the holiday: from intricate nativity scene figurines and handmade ornaments to toys and traditional sweets. From December 6 to 9, the Sabor a Málaga gastronomic fair will also take place here, where you can try the province’s finest products. The atmosphere is enhanced by children’s workshops and live music, making this the perfect spot for a family outing.
A very different atmosphere reigns at the fair in the port, on Muelle Uno promenade. Here, the Christmas hustle and bustle mixes with the fresh sea breeze and the cries of seagulls. This market stands out for its modern and laid-back style. Amid trendy shops and restaurants, you’ll find stalls offering unique designer gifts, delicacies, original clothing, and contemporary art. A walk along Muelle Uno is a chance to combine holiday shopping with stunning views of the Mediterranean and the moored yachts.
Unique formats
Not far from the center, on the square by the El Corte Inglés shopping mall, another miniature Christmas village springs up. Its neat wooden pavilions and thoughtful décor create an atmosphere of coziness and fairy-tale charm. The selection here is carefully curated: exquisite home decorations, aromatic candles, artisan sweets, and plenty of charming trinkets that make wonderful gifts. Thanks to its location, this market is one of the liveliest in the city.
For those seeking something truly unusual, it’s worth visiting the bazaar at the English Cemetery. Held for just one day—on December 21—within the walls of this historic Protestant necropolis, it boasts a unique, slightly gothic vibe. Here you’ll find antique books, vintage jewelry, and distinctive handcrafted items. All of this unfolds to the sounds of British Christmas carols, creating a remarkable cultural blend.
Festivities outside the city
The Christmas spirit is sweeping not only the capital but the entire province of Málaga. Charming markets are popping up in Marbella, Fuengirola, Torremolinos, and along the whitewashed streets of Mijas Pueblo. Each market has its own unique charm, offering local delicacies and handmade crafts. Beyond the markets, festive Málaga offers plenty of other attractions: a spectacular light show on Calle Larios, video mapping on the walls of the Cathedral, and a magical stroll through the illuminated Botanical Garden.
Incidentally, the tradition of Christmas markets came to Spain from Germany and Central Europe, but it quickly took root and gained a distinctive local flavor. In Andalusia, and in Málaga in particular, these markets are known for their warmth and special atmosphere. Instead of mulled wine, local sweet wines are often served, and among the treats you’ll find turrones, polvorones, and roasted chestnuts. The markets have become more than just a shopping destination—they are important social events where families and friends gather to embrace the spirit of the approaching Christmas together.
