Feijóo Plans to Change Rules for Deputies and Senators to Remove Their Immunity

Scandal or reform Who will come out on top in the political showdown

People’s Party leader Feijóo proposes a reform that would prevent politicians from evading court. He promises no deputy will be above the law. Heated debates and new regulations are ahead

Spain is once again witnessing bold statements: Alberto Núñez Feijóo, head of the Partido Popular, has launched an initiative that could upend the established order at the highest levels of power. His proposal is to revise the so-called ‘suplicatorio’ mechanism, which until now has allowed deputies and senators with parliamentary immunity to avoid prosecution. Feijóo insists it’s time to end the practice of politicians hiding behind their mandates—no one should be above the law.

In recent days, Spain’s political agenda has returned to the spotlight, thanks in large part to Feijóo’s sharp remarks. He has openly suggested that current Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and his circle are exploiting legal loopholes to avoid accountability. “History will not forgive sanchismo, and neither will my government,” he declared, making no secret of his stance towards his opponents.

The essence of the reform

The core of the initiative is simple yet revolutionary for Spanish politics. Currently, prosecuting a deputy or senator requires the approval of the entire Congress. If the majority votes against it, the case is automatically closed. Feijóo proposes to change this: even if Parliament refuses permission, the case should not be definitively dropped. As soon as a politician loses their mandate, the investigation should be resumed.

According to the opposition leader, this approach will help prevent situations where politicians evade court for years by exploiting their positions. He emphasizes, “No one should be above the law simply because they hold a parliamentary seat.”

Internal Party Mobilization

The reform announcement was made at an interparliamentary meeting in A Coruña, where dozens of representatives of the People’s Party from across the country gathered. Feijóo used the occasion to rally his supporters and made it clear: the party is ready for decisive change. He called for an end to “cosmetic reforms” and promised that all suspicious cases would be investigated to the end.

His words challenged not just his political opponents, but the entire system. “The laws were not prepared for a president who would ignore them. Even the Constitution did not anticipate that the government itself would be the first to break the rules,” he noted, clearly alluding to Sánchez.

Financial Battles

But Feijóo’s ambitions don’t end there. He promised that if he becomes prime minister, he will present a new model for the regional financing system within a year. This step is intended as an alternative to the proposal from Finance Minister María Jesús Montero, which has sparked heated debate among regional leaders.

Feijóo aims to accommodate the interests of most regions, but refuses to bow to extreme demands. He expects to meet about 80% of the requests in order to maintain party unity and avoid new conflicts. As early as next week, representatives of the Partido Popular will attend a meeting of the Council for Financial and Tax Policy, where a tense debate is anticipated.

Political Maneuvering

In the near future, Feijóo plans to hold an extraordinary meeting with the presidents of the autonomous communities in Zaragoza to showcase the party’s unity and strength ahead of the regional elections. Once again, funding and resource allocation between regions will be at the center of the discussion.

At the same time, Partido Popular is ramping up its challenge against the government in parliamentary committees. In the Senate, they intend to summon Francisco Salazar, a former Sánchez adviser accused of sexual harassment. This move is part of a broader strategy to step up pressure on the socialists and demonstrate a strong stance against corruption at every level.

Rhetoric and Emotion

In speeches by Partido Popular representatives, sharp comparisons and metaphors are being used more frequently. One such figure, Carlos Díaz-Pache, likened Sánchez’s influence on the country to the sea that surrounds and seeps into La Coruña. These vivid images not only attract attention but also highlight the intensity of passions in Spanish politics.

What is happening is not just a power struggle, but an attempt to change the very nature of the political system. Feijóo is betting on transparency and toughness, promising that no one will be able to escape responsibility anymore. But whether he will succeed remains an open question.
