Debate in the European Parliament: new challenges for the rental market
A discussion was held in Brussels on the impact of restrictions on short-term housing rentals. Representatives of Fevitur, which unites over half a million tourist properties across Spain, supported the position of the Apartur association. The focus was on initiatives in Catalonia and Barcelona that call for the annulment of previously issued permits for tourist rentals.
Property owners’ rights and a level playing field for all market participants
During her speech, Apartur director Marian Muro pointed out that new measures introduced by regional and municipal authorities could infringe on property owners’ rights. According to her, such steps give hotels an unfair advantage and restrict other accommodation options. Fevitur emphasized that the situation in Catalonia goes beyond a local dispute and raises questions of legal certainty and competition at the European level.
A call for transparency and fair regulation
The head of Fevitur, Silvia Blasco, emphasized that the issues being discussed in Brussels are directly linked to the need for predictable regulations and equal rules for all types of rentals. The organization called on European institutions to thoroughly assess the proportionality and legality of the restrictive measures in place in Catalonia, as well as to ensure transparency and a balance of interests among all market participants. Fevitur expressed its willingness to engage in dialogue and cooperation to develop optimal solutions that will protect property owners’ rights and ensure the sustainable development of the rental housing sector.
