Starting in early 2026, a major change will take place on Spain’s roads: all drivers will be required to have a special V16 emergency beacon in their vehicles. This light device will replace the familiar triangles previously used to signal a breakdown or accident on the road. The new device is mounted on the car’s roof and must remain visible to other road users even in adverse weather conditions.
However, not all drivers are convinced of the safety of the new device. Social media is buzzing with discussions about potential risks related to V16 batteries. Some users worry that the batteries could overheat or even explode, especially if a car is left under the scorching sun for long periods. Drivers also note that not all V16 models are the same: some use standard batteries, while others rely on lithium batteries, raising additional questions.
Experts emphasize that all emergency lights must comply with strict standards and operate in temperatures from –10 to +50 degrees. The risk of short circuit or fire is extremely low if the device is functioning properly and has no manufacturing defects. Nevertheless, specialists recommend not leaving cars with the V16 on the sun for long periods, regularly checking battery condition, and following the manufacturer’s instructions.
The introduction of the new rules has drawn criticism from some public organizations. They argue that mandatory use of the V16 is not always justified and could even create additional hazards on certain road sections. Nevertheless, authorities insist: starting in 2026, drivers without an emergency beacon will face a fine of up to €80—the same penalty as for lacking a warning triangle. In addition, if a driver steps onto the roadway without a reflective vest, a more serious punishment will apply: a €200 fine and the loss of four points on their driver’s license.
In the coming months, more certified V16 models are expected to enter the market, and drivers are advised to purchase a device in advance and familiarize themselves with its features. The new measure aims to improve road safety but requires close attention to details and strict adherence to all regulations.
