Gabriel Rufián, a representative of ERC in Congress, openly voices concerns about the future if conservatives come to power. His call for the unification of independent and left-wing movements reflects growing unease among progressive citizens, who fear being left without political support.
Rufián makes it clear: he is not seeking a national political role and does not plan to lead a broad left-wing coalition. However, he emphasizes that the current situation calls for decisive action. In his view, if independent and leftist parties fail to unite, the consequences could be irreversible. He points out that other countries are already experiencing bans, arrests, and pressure on media and journalists, and similar trends could reach Spain as well.
A call for unity
The politician proposes creating a new platform that would bring together groups from Bildu to BNG, Compromís, Adelante Andalucía, and ERC. Such an initiative, he says, is essential to protect the interests of those unwilling to vote for traditional parties but who do not want right-wing forces in power. Rufián believes that unless this step is taken, progressive Spaniards will be left vulnerable, and political inaction will amount to irresponsibility.
He acknowledges that such an initiative could cost him his political career, but he is not afraid of the consequences. Rufián is convinced: if action is not taken now, the consequences for democracy could be extremely severe. He points out that fear is growing in society, and many share his concerns.
Criticism and proposals
Rufián distances himself from attempts to compare him with other prominent left-wing politicians, stressing that his stance is the result of internal party discussions, not personal ambition. He notes that the leadership of some parties demonstrates sluggishness and insufficient understanding of ongoing changes. In his view, it is necessary to respond more swiftly to the challenges of the times.
Rufián pays special attention to the working class, emphasizing that the problems faced by residents of Cornellà and Vallecas are similar. He is proud to represent these people, without wavering in his views on independence. At the same time, he insists that it is important not only to fight for self-determination, but also to tackle citizens’ everyday issues, such as access to housing and a decent standard of living.
Intra-party discussions
The question of a possible alliance between ERC and Comunes in Catalonia remains open. Rufián notes that the idea is already being discussed, but the final decision depends on party leadership. He also recalls the existing agreements between ERC, BNG, and Bildu for joint participation in the European elections, which could serve as an example for other regions.
Rufián sharply criticizes right-wing and reactionary nationalism, which he says seeks to impose its identity and exclude dissenters. He emphasizes the importance of digital influence in contemporary politics and notes that his style of speeches and tough stance in parliamentary committees are ways to defend the interests of ordinary people.
Concerns and challenges
The politician warns of the risk of desocialization and a rise in right-wing sentiment among youth. He believes that to counter these trends, it is necessary to offer real solutions, such as affordable housing and social support. In his view, this is the only way to halt the growing popularity of far-right ideas.
