Guardamar Beaches in Alicante Closed Due to Sighting of Rare ‘Blue Dragon’

Un inusual visitante marino obligó a izar la bandera roja en la costa

Swimming has been temporarily banned at the beaches of Guardamar del Segura in Alicante province following the discovery of two specimens of the rare mollusk Glaucus atlanticus, known as the ‘blue dragon.’ Authorities have increased safety measures and are urging beachgoers to exercise caution.

In Guardamar del Segura (Alicante province), beaches have been temporarily closed for swimming after two specimens of the unusual sea mollusk Glaucus atlanticus, also known as the “blue dragon,” were spotted along the coast. A red flag was raised at the Vivers beach, which is located near the mouth of the Segura River.

This mollusk species is extremely rare in the Mediterranean Sea and usually inhabits tropical and temperate waters. According to local authorities, the appearance of the “blue dragon” on the Spanish coast is likely due to ocean currents that may have carried it from afar.

The city administration of Guardamar has organized extra patrols on the beaches to spot any possible new specimens. So far, no further sightings have been reported, but precautionary measures remain in place. If the mollusk is found, beachgoers are strongly advised not to touch it, even with gloves, and to immediately notify lifeguards or local authorities.

Glaucus atlanticus is distinguished by its elongated body about 4 centimeters long, with characteristic blue and silver stripes on its belly and a gray back. Despite its small size, contact with this mollusk can cause severe pain, nausea, and vomiting. If contact occurs, specialists recommend rinsing the affected area with seawater and seeking medical assistance.

This marine creature feeds on larger organisms, including poisonous jellyfish, whose toxins it can accumulate and use for its own defense. Because of this, the ‘blue dragon’ is considered dangerous to humans upon direct contact.

The beaches of Guardamar will remain closed until further information about the situation is available. Authorities continue to monitor the coastline and advise residents and tourists to exercise caution while at the seaside.
