On Saturday morning, a tragic hunting accident occurred near Cervera, in the Segarra region. A group of four local residents went out to hunt roe deer, but after the hunt ended, tragedy struck—one of the hunters accidentally shot his companion.
The events unfolded on a forest road between les Oluges and Tarroja de Segarra as the participants were preparing to head home. The firearm, held by one of the men, discharged as he was disassembling or moving it. The bullet struck another member of the group, who was the hunt organizer and manager of the local hunting area.
Medical teams responded quickly to the scene, but were unable to save the victim—the man died on the spot. He was 64 years old. The other participants, all residents of Segarra, were in shock. The detained hunter is 30 years old.
The Catalan police (Mossos d’Esquadra) immediately launched an investigation. Officers checked the firearm documents and hunting permits—everything was in order. Representatives from the Natural Resources Regulatory Agency also arrived at the scene to ensure the hunt was legal.
The case of the hunter’s death has been referred to the first-instance court of Servera. A judicial panel visited the scene to carry out the necessary procedural actions and documentation. The investigation is determining all the circumstances to establish whether there was any violation of firearm regulations or if it was a tragic accident.
Such incidents are extremely rare in the Segarra region, making this tragedy particularly shocking for the local community. Residents have extended their condolences to the victim’s family, while hunting clubs are discussing the need for additional safety measures at similar events.
