In the very heart of Madrid, visitors can now embark on a journey through places connected to the life and works of Lope de Vega. A new tour, organized by the Carpetania Madrid team, invites everyone to stroll through the iconic corners of the Barrio de las Letras, where every house and alleyway preserves the memory of the great Spanish playwright.
The tour, titled “In the Name of Lope,” combines elements of theater, history, and urban legends. Participants find themselves in the very spots where the vibrant life of Spain’s Golden Age once unfolded. The walk includes streets such as del Prado, Cervantes, León, and Huertas, and features visits to key sites: the Lope de Vega house-museum, the San Sebastián church, and the Trinitarians’ monastery. Here, amid historic facades, you can truly sense the atmosphere of the era that gave birth to immortal plays.
Along the route, participants discover little-known details about the writer’s life: his studies at the Imperial College, his ordination, passionate romances, and meteoric rise on the theater stage. Special attention is paid to how Lope de Vega’s works appeared on the stages of Madrid theaters, such as Corral de la Cruz and Príncipe, and how his personal life became intertwined with the city’s history.
The organizers have included not only historical narratives, but also small theatrical performances, allowing guests to truly immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the past. The program is designed for a wide audience: individual tourists, groups, schoolchildren, and students. Advance registration is required, and further details can be obtained from the organizers.
The route lasts just over two hours and covers the most important spots in the area. The price includes the services of a professional guide, handouts, and insurance. This is an excellent way to discover a different side of Madrid and explore new facets of Lope de Vega’s creative world.
