Ezcaray prepares to launch large-scale bike park
A project is kicking off in one of the most popular towns of La Rioja that promises to redefine mountain biking in the region. Authorities in Ezcaray have opened public discussion on plans to create a modern park for mountain biking enthusiasts. The new trails will start right from the town’s streets, giving cyclists quick access to starting points without extra transfers.
Unlike earlier plans, the trails won’t be located near the Valdezcaray ski resort. After careful analysis, experts decided to move the project closer to the town itself. This approach will better integrate the cycling infrastructure into everyday life in Ezcaray and reduce the environmental impact.
Eco-friendly trails for all skill levels
The plan includes about ten kilometers of new trails, along with upgrades to existing routes. All tracks will be designed to respect the terrain and unique landscape. On the eastern and western edges of the town, routes will appear in the neighborhoods of El Molino, Santa Bárbara, Chinajua, and Micobaña. This will allow cyclists to reach the highest points of the routes without leaving the urban area.
The project features gentle climbs with a gradient of around 5% and descents equipped with speed-boosting elements—small jumps and platforms. For fans of dynamic riding, special flow trails with gradients up to 7% will be built, allowing riders to move almost without braking or extra effort.
Five trails for all skill levels
Three routes will be created in the eastern part of the city: for intermediate, advanced, and expert levels. In the west, two more technical trails designed for experienced athletes will be built. All routes will adhere to sustainable construction principles and blend seamlessly into the landscape.
Unlike many other bike parks, there will be no mechanical lifts. The organizers opted for self-powered ascents—reaching the highest point by bike will take less than an hour. This approach minimizes environmental impact and preserves the spirit of classic mountain biking.
A new chapter for sports tourism in La Rioja
Construction is expected to take about ten months after all necessary documentation is signed. Escaray has long been popular among outdoor enthusiasts from La Rioja, Madrid, and the Basque Country (País Vasco). The new bike park will turn the city into a year-round hub for athletes and tourists, not just a winter destination.
The proximity of the slopes to the city center will make Escaray even more appealing to visitors, while locals will be able to enjoy the infrastructure with ease. The project promises to harmoniously blend sports, nature, and environmental care, opening up new opportunities for tourism development in the region.
