Madrid Cycling Race Final Disrupted by Mass Protest Against Israel

Thousands of protesters halt La Vuelta in central Madrid – police use force

The final stage of the La Vuelta cycling race in Madrid was canceled due to a large-scale protest. Demonstrators blocked the race route, leading to clashes with police. The events resulted in museum closures and arrests.

On Sunday evening, central Madrid became the scene of a large-scale protest that completely changed the course of the final stage of the prestigious cycling race. Instead of the expected awards ceremony and the finish line at Plaza de Cibeles, spectators and athletes witnessed thousands of people blocking the route, demanding a break in relations with Israel.

From early in the day, the atmosphere in the area between Atocha and Cibeles was tense. Groups of activists opposed to Israel’s policies began gathering long before the race started. They tried to break through to the finish line but were pushed back by police. After that, the protesters moved to the Paseo del Prado, where they kept trying to overcome the barricades despite the presence of law enforcement.

By evening, it became clear that the race could not finish as planned. Organizers announced the complete cancellation of the stage after protesters fully blocked the route between the Prado Museum and the Cibeles Palace. The barriers intended to protect the athletes were used to build barricades to prevent police vehicles from passing. In response, the police used tear gas, stun grenades, and batons. Protesters responded by throwing bottles, sticks, and stones. As a result of the clashes, more than twenty police officers and several demonstrators were injured.

Amid the developments, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum was forced to close its doors, leaving visitors inside to observe the events through the gates. The activists who organized the protest declared victory, viewing the cancellation of the race as proof that pressure on the authorities can lead to a break in ties with Israel. They also expressed hope that none of the participants would be fined or punished.

Among the protesters were also Madrid residents who came to voice their opposition to the Israeli team’s participation in the race. In their view, the sporting event was used for political propaganda, and their actions were a logical response to such provocation. Authorities reported two people detained and more than a hundred thousand people taking to the streets. Security forces tried to prevent Palestinian symbols from being brought in, fueling further discontent among the crowd.

As a result, instead of a sporting celebration, central Madrid became the epicenter of political confrontation, and the La Vuelta finale will be remembered not for the athletes’ victory, but for mass protests and violent clashes.
