A series of Shakira concerts in Madrid has sparked a heated dispute between city and regional authorities, as well as residents of the Villaverde district. The controversy goes beyond the cultural life of the capital, touching on safety, transport logistics, and the impact on the daily life of locals. Organizers plan to hold six Shakira concerts in September at the Iberdrola Music venue, which previously hosted major festivals. To do this, Live Nation intends to install a temporary structure called Estadio Shakira, a move that has stirred mixed reactions among local residents and officials. Tickets are already in high demand, and the event is set to become one of the biggest music happenings of the year in Europe.
Sharp disagreements
However, preparations for the show are marked by serious disputes among representatives of different levels of government. The government delegate in Madrid, Francisco Martín, sent an official letter to the city’s mayor, José Luis Martínez Almeida, requesting that no mass events be allowed at the venue until issues with safety and transport accessibility are resolved. The letter emphasizes that similar concerns were raised earlier, especially after incidents at the Mad Cool festival and the Harry Styles concert, where there were disruptions to transportation and questions about security arrangements.
Martín recalled that city authorities had already acknowledged the existence of these problems; however, in his opinion, they have not taken sufficient action to address them. He insists that the city hall should reconsider its position and demands that mass events only take place if the infrastructure is fully ready and all safety standards are met.
Response from regional authorities
Meanwhile, the Community of Madrid’s housing, transport and infrastructure adviser, Jorge Rodrigo, stated that the concerts will go ahead regardless and all safety measures will be ensured. He accused the government delegate of trying to obstruct the region’s initiatives and called his actions politically motivated. According to Rodrigo, part of the responsibility for safety rests on the delegate himself, while regional authorities are prepared to fulfill their obligations.
Residents of Villaverde and Getafe have also found themselves involved in this dispute, repeatedly meeting with authorities to express concerns about the chosen location. They point out the lack of convenient access routes, the need for road closures, and the risk of exceeding permissible noise levels. In their view, the temporary metal stadium structure may amplify the acoustic effect, and changes to traffic organization could cause difficulties throughout the area.

The concert organizers, Live Nation, insist that the Iberdrola Music venue has already proven suitable for large-scale events. They assure that all technical and organizational issues will be addressed, and guest safety will be a priority. According to them, no event will take place without approval from engineers and experts, and all necessary certificates will be obtained in advance.
Nevertheless, some residents continue to express dissatisfaction. They fear that a series of concerts will lead to temporary closures of industrial zones, add pressure to transport infrastructure, and disrupt daily routines. Certain activists believe the chosen location is unsuitable for events of this scale and are demanding a reassessment of the decision.
