In the municipality of Sant Josep on the island of Ibiza, police officers arrested a 26-year-old man after he received an unusual package by mail. Inside, they found 600 grams of cocaine sent from Barcelona. The operation was the result of work by mail inspection specialists who flagged the suspicious shipment on its way to the Balearic Islands.
The investigation began after the anti-smuggling unit noticed discrepancies in the package’s documentation and packaging. Authorities then decided to monitor the parcel’s movement and identify the recipient. Shortly after collecting the delivery, the man was detained and the illegal substance seized.
Police note that such drug delivery routes are becoming increasingly popular among small-scale dealers and criminal groups. To disguise illegal substances, offenders use various items—from clothing to food products—as well as fake recipient information. This method allows them to hope for anonymity and avoid law enforcement attention.
In recent months, the Balearic Islands have seen an increase in attempts to import drugs through postal services. Law enforcement has stepped up monitoring of shipments, especially those coming from major cities such as Barcelona. According to authorities, criminals are actively using social media to find customers and arrange deals, then shipping small quantities to reduce the risk of significant losses if intercepted.
As a result of the latest operation, authorities not only seized a large shipment of cocaine but also uncovered a scheme used by individual players in the drug market. Police are continuing their investigation to identify possible links between the detainee and other participants in the illegal trade.
