Storm Winds and Giant Waves Batter Spain’s Mediterranean Coast

Storm Alert: Giant Waves up to 12 Meters Threaten the Balearic Islands and Catalonia

A powerful storm has struck eastern Spain, with winds and waves threatening the Balearic Islands and Catalonia. Authorities warn coastal areas of heightened risks.

Spain’s eastern coast has been hit by a powerful storm. From the early morning, residents of the Balearic Islands and Catalonia have witnessed a sharp increase in wind and hazardous sea conditions. Authorities have declared an orange alert for several regions, warning of potential impacts on coastal areas.

On the Balearic Islands, especially Menorca and Mallorca, northern wind gusts reach up to 75 kilometers per hour. Waves near the shores rise to six meters, with some crests reaching twelve meters. In Ibiza and Formentera, the situation is somewhat calmer, but a yellow alert remains in effect: winds reach up to 60 kilometers per hour, and waves rise up to three meters.

Catalonia and the Balearics: Epicenter of Severe Weather

The Catalan coast is also in the storm’s path. In the province of Girona, an orange alert is in effect due to strong northern and northwesterly winds, with speeds locally reaching 90 kilometers per hour. The sea is turbulent: waves are up to five meters high, with some swells reaching eight. In Tarragona, a yellow alert has been issued: winds are somewhat weaker, but waves still reach up to four meters.

All provinces of Catalonia are experiencing strong gusts of wind, which may reach up to 80 kilometers per hour. Local authorities are urging residents and visitors to exercise caution, especially near the coast and in open areas.

Valencia and Aragón: Intensifying Winds and Coastal Risks

The storm has also affected other regions of eastern Spain. In the province of Castellón (Valencian Community), as well as in Huesca and Teruel (Aragon), a yellow alert has been issued due to strong gusts of wind that may reach up to 80 kilometers per hour. In Alicante, a warning for adverse coastal conditions has been announced: winds here are reaching 60 kilometers per hour, and waves are up to three meters high.

Authorities remind that a yellow alert does not pose a serious threat to the public. However, certain activities, especially those related to the sea, can be dangerous. Fishermen and owners of small boats are advised to stay ashore until the weather stabilizes.

Recommendations and precautions

An orange alert means a significant risk to normal life and activities in coastal areas. Residents and tourists are advised to avoid seaside walks, stay away from breakwaters and piers, and closely monitor weather updates. If conditions worsen, temporary restrictions on movement and port operations may be imposed.

Although a yellow alert does not usually pose a threat to most people, authorities urge everyone to remain vigilant. Strong winds and high waves can lead to local incidents, especially in areas with unstable shorelines.

Situation at sea: The storm continues

According to meteorologists, stormy conditions are expected to persist over the next 24 hours. The most challenging situation is forecast for the Balearic Islands and the northern regions of Catalonia. Strong winds and high waves may disrupt ferry operations and cause interruptions to coastal transport.

Residents and visitors in the affected regions are closely monitoring updates and warnings. Authorities are prepared to respond swiftly to any emergencies in order to minimize the impact on people and infrastructure.
