National Geographic Discovers Lost Town in Albacete – The Perfect Getaway in Spain

This remote spot in Spain has amazed even seasoned travelers

There is a unique place in the heart of Spain, blending wild nature and history. Here you can find ancient traces of humanity. Discover an untouched part of the country.

In the very heart of the wilds of Castilla-La Mancha, in the south of Albacete province, lies a small municipality that has recently caught the attention of global travel experts. This place has become a real find for those seeking solitude, a connection with antiquity, and untouched landscapes. Its surroundings offer a true haven for hiking and archaeology enthusiasts, where cave paintings, medieval castles, and mountain trails merge into a breathtaking panorama. This borderland, shaped over centuries by changing cultures and the power of nature, invites you to discover one of the most hidden gems of the Iberian Peninsula.

We are talking about Nerpio, an enclave in the mountains of Sierra del Segura, captivating with its authenticity and rich natural and cultural heritage. Surrounded by deep gorges, canyons, and ancient forests, this Albacete village preserves the traces of civilizations that have inhabited it since time immemorial—from the earliest hunter-gatherers to medieval orders that left their mark in its chronicles. Remarkably, more than 70% of all the region’s cave paintings are found within its municipal boundaries. Sites like Solana de las Covachas or Torcal de las Bojadillas are recognized by UNESCO as part of the World Heritage of Mediterranean Basin rock art.

Among its architectural treasures, the Taibilla Castle stands out. This fortress, built in the 11th century during the period of Muslim rule, is described by local guides as a “frontier beacon and witness to past battles.” Its impressive main tower, the Torre del Homenaje, dominates the valley from atop a high cliff, as if still guarding the paths leading toward Andalucía and Murcia. At its foot lie the remains of ancient Taibalía, the original settlement from which the modern town grew. Around this historic core, a unique, blended identity has formed—a result of centuries of cultural exchange that can still be felt in its streets and traditional festivities.

In addition to its historical heritage, this area is a true paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The Taibilla River Canyon offers breathtaking routes, such as the Sarsalar Trail, which runs along the bottom of the gorge. The path is outfitted with wooden walkways built right over the water and observation decks that provide incredible views. Other highlights include the “Centenary Walnut Trees” route and trails leading to the village of Mingarnao or the Taibilla Reservoir—perfect settings for birdwatching or simply enjoying a near-pristine environment. The Sarsalar Trail is a circular route just over 8 kilometers long, which can be completed in one and a half to two and a half hours; it requires no special training and is accessible to almost everyone.

When night falls, the clear, light-pollution-free sky turns the municipality into a prime spot for astrotourism. Stargazing here becomes a special meditative experience. Nature, history, and profound silence merge into a unique opportunity worthy of any seeker of authentic experiences. It’s a total immersion in another reality, where time seems to slow down, allowing you to rethink your usual pace of life and truly rest your soul.
