On Sunday night, two more boats carrying migrants were discovered on the island of Formentera. Within just a few hours, 34 people landed on the coast, arriving on small vessels. The first group, consisting of 19 people, was found at sea about five kilometers south of the La Mola lighthouse. The rescue operation involved maritime service officers from the Civil Guard and rescue teams.
The second group, numbering 15 people, was found on land, on one of the roads in the Es Caló area. Here, members of the public safety unit and local police joined the search. According to preliminary information, all the arrivals are originally from Maghreb countries.
These incidents are part of a recent series of similar cases reported on the island over the past few days. From Friday to Saturday, authorities on Formentera detained four more groups of migrants, with a total of 67 people. As a result, over the course of a single weekend, the number of illegal arrivals in the Balearic Islands reached 101.
Local authorities note that this trend is cause for concern, as the number of arrivals has risen significantly in a short period. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, and emergency services are operating in heightened mode. The issue of the migrants’ further accommodation and fate remains unresolved and is being discussed at the level of the regional government.
