A fierce political conflict has erupted in Albacete: the local council has officially declared Pedro Sánchez a persona non grata. The decision was made at a regular meeting, which also saw calls for his immediate resignation as head of the government. Representatives from the Partido Popular (PP) and Vox, as well as an independent deputy formerly affiliated with Vox, voted in favor of the initiative. Socialists and Unidas Podemos members opposed it.
The motives behind such a strong stance were explained by the deputy who initiated the discussion. According to him, Sánchez is accused of collaborating with radical groups and the heirs of terrorist organizations, as well as failing to govern the country effectively. His speech included criticism of the government’s actions during the pandemic and natural disasters, along with allegations of corruption and undermining democratic institutions.
Political divisions and accusations
The debate in the council chamber was tense. A representative of the Partido Popular backed the initiative, emphasizing that the current government’s policies are driving the country toward an economic crisis and weakening democracy. In her view, resisting Sánchez’s policies is a matter of national importance. She also accused the Prime Minister of actions that are harming all of Spain.
In response, the Socialists and Unidas Podemos representatives sharply condemned the council’s decision. They stated that such actions undermine the foundations of democracy and turn political debate into personal attacks. One of the deputies accused the resolution’s initiator of sympathizing with the country’s authoritarian past and reminded everyone that politicians are meant to serve the interests of the city’s residents, not settle personal scores.
The role of independent deputies and Vox’s position
Particular attention was drawn to the stance of an independent deputy, who had previously been a member of Vox but was expelled from party activities after the city budget vote. He was the author of this highly controversial initiative. The support he received from his former party colleagues and the People’s Party was decisive in passing the resolution.
Despite disagreements with the initiator, Vox also voted in favor of declaring Sánchez persona non grata. A party representative explained that their support was driven by a desire to protect the interests of Spaniards, even if the initiative came from a political opponent.
Response and consequences for the city’s political life
The council’s decision caused a strong reaction in Albacete and beyond. The debate was marked by mutual accusations of populism, violating democratic norms, and using independent deputies to push through controversial measures. The opposition accused the city’s mayor of manipulation and trying to shift responsibility for what was happening.
At the same time, supporters of the resolution insist that their actions are motivated by concern for the country’s future and the need for a change in political direction. Debates continue in Albacete over the legitimacy of such decisions at the municipal level and their impact on national politics.
